However, for this week's challenge I won Robot Commando, going for the simple potion ending because that's the only way I can remember. Sk 10 St 15 Lu 12 Fights: PTERANODON, 3 GIANT LIZARDS, MAN-TRAP PLANT
Nearly got defeated by the Pteranodon because I was greedy and didn't Escape.

I failed at Mudworm Swamp, though it was my most successful attempt yet. This time I got as far as meeting with the leader of the rogues in the village of Doom. When he offered me some firewater to drink I assumed it was a test to prove myself macho enough to trade with the local rapscallions, and downed it. Alas, it was a 'drinking alcohol is bad, m'kay?' lecture, so I was drugged, robbed, and dumped in the swamp while my useless companions sat around being useless.

Mudworm Swamp requires some very tough dice rolls to beat. Not that it mattered for me as I made the same mistake as Greenspine

Tried House of Hell which, again embarrassingly, I've never owned and don't know at all.
Skill 10 Stamina 21 Luck 11 (Max) Fear 11
I survived longer than I was expecting, to be honest, but all I picked up were a length of rope, some garlic and a couple of nondescript weapons. Ultimately ended up where I know you mustn't end up: the kitchen. I was aware of a lack of keys.
Fights won: hunchback (no kill), 2 x zombies, ghoul

My Sorcery journey has come to an end Wizard Sk8 St22 L12 (upgraded from Book 1) I somehow missed both the scholar and the fair where you can be redirected to him. So went exploring looking for fights but didn't really find any despite getting very lost in the sewers. I reached the end with only one spell line.
Kills Black Elf × 3 Harpie × 2 Will probably try Robot Commando if I get a chance.

Week 18 scoring 1st= peasantscribbler – 6 (stats bonus 1 + most fights won bonus 5) 1st= terrysalt – 6 (stats bonus 1 + closest to victory bonus 5) 3rd= nathanh - 4 (stats bonus 4) 3rd= vastariner - 4 (stats bonus 4) 5th: kieran – 3 (unused items bonus 3) 6th: thealmightymudworm - 1 (stats bonus 1)
I think since I am perforce a non-participant, my having won House doesn't cancel out the 'closest to victory' bonus in a week where nobody still playing managed a win.
Running totals 1st: terrysalt - 146 2nd: vastariner – 129 3rd: nathanh – 125 4th: kieran - 89 5th: The Count - 85 6th: peasantscribbler - 79 7th: thealmightymudworm - 76 8th: schlendrian - 52

I did even worse at Robot Commando, but my stats were worse so I will put that forward as my entry for this week: Sk7 St23 L7 I ended up smashing my blue potion so had to do things the hard way. Praying for peace was not a good way to go about this and I fell fast asleep
Victories: Pternadon

Sorcery part 2. The name of this city is annoying. Carrying over: Sk 9 St 19 Lu 13 Wearing: skullcap Wielding: +1 a/s broadsword and +2 a/s armband Bearing: tinderbox/torch, locket, key, honey, 11GP Info: Need a spell to get out again (Analander intel strikes again) 2 mugs of Wayfarer's 3rd Noble of Khare and do not kiss Courga on the cheek Sleepless ram/sham The left eye leads the way Extra goods: Leather gauntlet (re-roll on one a/s die if St <5) 15 GP (running total: 21) Locket (8GP, cannot be broken into change, swapped for lucky talisman pt 2) Another 15GP (36, spent 2 on cabinet of luck, so 34) Lucky talisman (-1 on Luck tests) 5GP from Flanker (39, then spent 8 on B&B, so 31) 2nd lucky talisman (no -1LU if fail luck test) Forgot how many Prov I started with, so bought 4 at the market stall (Gold: 19) ...and a bow/silver arrows (14) ...and snakebite antidote (11) Serpent ring (140) Spell McGuffins: Bracelet of bone Sun jewel Green-haired wig Spell lines: So tumblers 2 sealed deep inside I bid ye portals open wide 1 lock made out of Golem's hide By Courga's grace, and 4ga's pride Kills: Mantis man Ogre fighter Deathwraith Harpies (one neutralized by spell, I assume I squish it after the first is dead) Stats: St 17, Lu 12; before I turn to 511, I Libra myself back to max Another fairly easy success, helped by having played this one quite a bit; I know which traps to avoid, the routes to the spell lines, and was happy to take the risks given the very good stats the character has; only dodgy bit was taking on the Mantis Man but finished it off quickly
Indeed, not a single attack round lost in the entire adventure...

In Kharé my middling Luck caused me to wind up in the sewers when I attempted to enter the Noble's tomb, and despite having a Skill of 10, I took enough damage from the Slime Eater that the Deathwraith was able to kill me before I could hit it enough times to be able to call on Libra.

I should have re-read my Shamutanti Hills post before starting Khare.I was right in my post to be concerned about how much gold I was carrying over from Sorcery 1. But instead of prioritizing important purchases in Khare, I splurged on magical gauntlets and Inn food I didn't need. This left me short for purchasing the silver arrows I did need to fight the Deathwraith. I didn't know that you can call on Libra to escape that fight, but it didn't matter because I had already called on her to get me out of Red-Eye jail.
Initial Stats: Skill=5, Stamina=17, Luck=12
Fights Won (0)
Items Acquired Gauntlet of Weaponry green wig
Information Gathered "So tumblers two sealed deep inside" "I bid you portals open wide"

A Skill of 8 meant that the 'potion' option was my only chance of getting anywhere near success in Robot Commando. Fights won Pterodactyl (almost destroyed my light flyer) 3 Giant Lizards (practically halved my Stamina) Man-Trap Plant (seriously damaged the Myrmidon I took to replace the flyer) Air-Fighter (nearly annihilated the Wasp Fighter for which I traded in the Myrmidon)
Finding the City of the Guardians by accident, I upgraded to a Trouper XI, which successfully weathered the storm over the City of Worship and gave me victory. 24-hour warning for thealmightymudworm, potential late joiners-in, and any lapsed participants who want to resume play. I swear random.org knows when I'm rolling stats and makes sure to give me a skill of 7. *sigh*

Died in the first fight which was against a street fighter.

I tried both options this time and failed both, but I want Kharé counted as the difference in stats is substantial. I hadn't played either before(!)
Robot Commando SKILL 12 STAMINA 23 LUCK 8 Made potion, but got killed by lab animals
Kharé Obviously playing as a wizard and a fresh one at that as I didn't win in TSH
SKILL 6 STAMINA 17 LUCK 7 Got a bit further with this one, but ended up dying in a crypt fighting a deathwraith.
Inventory: magical self-locking chain, skullcap, mirror with gold back, scroll, broadsword (-1AS, 3 damage), tinderbox Provisions: 2 Gold: 0 Note: One line of the North Gate spell is "I bid you portals, open wide"
One fight won against Svinn

Two abject failures but I'll go with Armies of Death where my stats were so bad I decided to explore one of the false routes. Sk8 St18 Lu8 Tried on a ring I shouldn't have and got eaten by a trickster hag while presumably my 220 soldiers just stood outside her hut wondering what was taking me so long.

I know (and love) Rebel Planet so well that me playing it would be more like a novel than a gamebook, subject to the vagarious roll of the dice, so decided to try Armies Of Death hardcore-play-style.
Sk: 12 St: 17 Lu: 12
Hm. Good news: picked up 10 gold pieces and a ring.
Bad news: the ring basically killed me via the medium of the Trickster Hag.
So, basically, all over within half-a-dozen references with a ridiculous insta-death that a) depended on impossible knowledge for the reader and b) would have surely been common knowledge for the character.

I'm not really in it for the winning, I'm in it for a) reacquaintance with books I haven't looked at in a while and b) seeing how far I can go when not manipulating the old dice rolls or waiting till I roll up a boffo character. I might look at Rebel Planet if I get the chance but it would only be a fluke that would stop me from winning it, which is not particularly in the spirit.

I'm telling you. It KNOWS what I need the die rolls for.
Forest of Doom Skill: 7 (again) Stamina: 21 Luck: 12
Items: 10 provisions, 45 gp, holy water, glove of missile dexterity, armband of strength, brass flute, 2 maggot-ridden biscuits, necklace of mouse skulls, hammer handle, belladonna, dust of levitation, silver key, hammer head Knowledge: this book is pretty forgiving of low skill heroes Fights: 2 hobgoblins, goblin, 3 vampire bats, 2 wild hill men
I decided to pass on the garlic buds, figuring I could take the vampire bats. I was right but only just. Luckily I ignored Champskees' recommendation and took a stamina potion instead of a luck one meaning I was able to push on, deal with the wild hill men surprisingly well and then coast to victory.

I know how to win Armies of Death but have never succeeded, so let's try that. Sk 9 St 22 Lu 12 Thanks to some lucky rolls against the Elite Fanatic (only took one hit), I prevailed! Kills: AXEMAN, 2 SEWER GOBLINS, CALACORM, HILL TROLL, MOUNTAIN ORC, 2 GOBLINS, ELITE FANATIC
I think this book would be pretty fair if some of the SKILL items were Attack Strength bonuses instead. The skirmish battles are pretty pointless but I actually almost lost one!

How are you counting skirmish victories in Armies of Death? If you defeat 10 opponents, does that count as 10, 1, or 0 combat wins?

I decided to try both adventures for week 20, and I rolled high stats for each. I was doing well in skirmishes in Armies of Death, but I eventually lost a skirmish to 10 Garks. I had slightly lower stats for Rebel Planet (and I won an equal number of fights in both adventures), so that is the one I will count. I died falling off a cliff (I failed a Luck test). This outcome was influenced by two earlier "mistakes". I reached into the wrong fissure to retrieve a shiny item, and I used up 3 luck points in my fight with the Rockbuzzard.
Initial Stats: Skill=12, Stamina=18, Luck=11
Fights Won (8) First Guard Second Guard Police Chief Street Fighter Laphodorm Scabrok Black Marketeer Rockbuzzard
Items Acquired Button (eagle with scroll design) Rope Laser sword Wire cutters Mind probe Staff with 7 metal strips
Information Gathered One O One 2100-2200

A quick reminder regarding The Forest of Doom: repeated combats only score the first time. If you reach the end without the hammer and loop round, any inexplicably resurrected opponents you fight again are worth nothing. As for my week 20 results, I got near-identical stats in both books. Rebel Planet: as a consequence of faulty memories, I wound up hunted through the tunnels beneath the museum on Radix, and got caught by the search party.
Armies of Death: I did almost as well as nathanh, but my 9 Skill (combined with damage taken in a few earlier fights) proved my downfall against the Elite Fanatic. My kill list, for what it's worth, looked like
Axeman 2 Sewer Goblins Calacorm Centaurs (Skirmish) Hobgoblins (Skirmish) Hill Troll Mountain Orc 2 Goblins

In skirmish battles I fought some CENTAURS and some... ORCS? The ones that try to kill the two dwarfs, I think. My elves shot all the FIRE IMPS before the skirmish battle with them would have happened.
Edit: HOBGOBLINS, not ORCS.

Attempted Rebel Planet. This too is new to me and I felt lost quite quickly
SKILL 8 STAMINA 22 LUCK 10 I basically got nowhere here and felt like I got most of the decisions I faced wrong. Messing up entry to the Fission Chips (GROAN) club, I tried to smash my way in and was eventually killed by a drunk, which felt sort of appropriate. Fights won: Guard, Grus, Indus, Northern Arcadian, 2 x Southern Arcadians

I decided to play it safe and go for an easy win in Forest of Doom. I briefly considered playing in psycho-attack mode to try to win the most fights. I quickly dismissed the idea in favour of simply winning an easy book, as my overall record is short on victories. I had no real complications other than taking a non-optimal river crossing by mistake.

Fights Won (5) Goblin Fish Man Werewolf First Wild Hill Man Second Wild Hill Man
