I may be wrong, but CAN you die of thirst in Temple of Terror? Not sure you can (other than stamina wastage). Which sort of makes Vatos not that tricky to find...

Had you made a start on any of the questions, kieran and adrius? How would you have compared? Nothing serious. I had a few ideas off the top of my head (interestingly all of them apparently unique), but I might have chosen to go with something else for each of them in the end. And there were quite a few I had no clue about and no idea where to even begin looking. My ideas were: Fire: The dragonhead archway in Trial of Champions Being shot: Dark elf in Creature of Havoc Ingesting poison: Pill game in City of Thieves Electrocution: Getting blasted by Thyra in Siege of Sardath My gut instinct for the starvation one was getting trapped in Nine Tails' cave in Bloodbones but after checking, it doesn't actually describe what happens to you after. So don't know what alternative I might have found there. Anyway, apologies again for not taking part and well done to Petch.

Don't think so, at least not in the desert stretch in seems. That was one of the 2 books I dug through in futility (Forest of Doom was the other). Never thought I'd ever find myself wishing for Livingstone to add another "pass item/spell check or die" scenario before this.

Looking closer, Gabe's death in Deathtrap Dungeon is about heat, not thirst, and the liquid in the bamboo pipe is magical rather than simply refreshing. So his death is from heat exhaustion, not thirst. And evilwizard only loses 4 stamina points in Temple of Terror, rather than dying outright. So maximum points for those two, I'm afraid. Sorry, but what did you mean previously when you mentioned that all the answers you received had been acceptable? I'd assumed that my answer had qualified then. Not complaining about my scoring, because the only other potential answer I found is probably a bad one too, so I couldn't have given a good backup answer to make up anyway, just wish to clarify this. The one about your car dying of thirst was unacceptable because it wasn't addressing the question. It is about an item (or at best, one of your companions) rather than you, as well as being chemically incorrect. The wrong answers were not unacceptable because they were still about you being thirsty and dying.

If it's any consolation, I had the car dying of thirst as well, but changed it for the Battleblade Warrior one.

If it's any consolation, I had the car dying of thirst as well, but changed it for the Battleblade Warrior one. I was actually confused when I first read Peter's reply about car dying of thirst, because I didn't submit any answer like that. But now I realize that was probably evilwizard's first attempted answer that he mentioned was rejected. I was curious why mine wasn't rejected in the first place if it was also wrong, but now I understand.

I may have a set of questions, but I'd wait on greenspine's, who said he's saving his for October (I'm guessing Halloween theme?), which is only a week away, since I plan to give a deadline for mine that's longer than that.

You're correct about the theme. I was planning on leaving it until the second half of the month, posting the results on the 31st, so unless you wanted to set a deadline of 3 weeks plus, there should be time for your questions first.

Since there are polls happening on the forum around the illustrations at the moment, I've decided to theme this round around the same subject. The usual books are eligible:
The 59 Fighting Fantasy gamebooks first published by Puffin. The 4 gamebooks in Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series. The 6 Fighting Fantasy gamebooks first published by Wizard Books. The 6 new Fighting Fantasy gamebooks first published by Scholastic.
However because of the theme of the round, to narrow the scope a little I'll add that where a Puffin book has been subsequently reprinted with new internal illustrations, I'll only accept answers referencing the illustrations from the original Puffin run book.
I'll also keep in play the rule Peter added from the previous round, that each answer has to come from a different gamebook please.
The quiz - for each question identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it:
1. A creature wearing a hat or crown
2. A moon
3. A salesperson and their wares
4. A creature sitting astride a living mount
5. A grave
6. A creature that is asleep
7. A spider
8. A gun
9. A creature that is kneeling or on their knees
10. A creature bound by rope or chains
For each answer please supply the name of the gamebook and the accompanying reference number to the illustration. For the avoidance of doubt where I have said 'creature' this can include humans and undead beings.
Answers by PM please by the deadline of midnight (GMT) on Thurs 12th October. Good luck!

Quick clarification on Q7 following an enquiry - I will accept an answer of a depiction of a creature that is recognisably part-spider.

I should be able to submit a set of kingmaking answers, though I have one question (and am not sufficiently trusted by the board yet to send a PM, so I might need your email address to participate): could the requirement to supply the § number be waived for the odd answer in case a book isn't at hand, but the image in question should be unambiguous and might even be linked to online?

Yes absolutely, as long as it's a verifiable internal illustration I'd be happy to accept such an answer and it would be nice to have a new player on board I'd rather not post my personal email on a public forum, but am sure there will be another way around it - if the issue with your PMs isn't resolved by the deadline, you can post your answers on the thread after the deadline has passed and I'll hold off on posting the results until you've done it?

Responding to received PMs worked (as I should already have known), and in any case it seems I can message anyone now, so I suppose the magic number of posts is five. I'll dive into some books for answers.

Thank you to adrius for your answers. That brings the total number of participants to 14 which I believe is the most we've had since the opening couple of rounds, which is nice to see.
Ok, results time. As more than one player observed when submitting their answers, a number of the questions I have set in this round are very broad with a high number of potential answers. I've been quite mean in some of the previous rounds I've run in the past by posing some questions with a very narrow scope so have perhaps been guilty of overcompensating a bit here - but luckily the high number of players in this round means the chances of clashes are increased which will hopefully keep things interesting!
The players:
Gabe Fandango evilwizard kieran greenspine trialmaster hallucination Per vastariner sylas Peter Peter's wife Wizard Slayer scouserob adrius
Question 1: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A creature wearing a hat or crown
Answers:
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain 168 (Orc chieftain): 2 (vastariner, scouserob) The Forest of Doom 170 (Arragon): 1 (trialmaster) Talisman of Death 52 (Wodeman with crown of mistletoe): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Demons of the Deep 232 (Living statue with dolphin crown): 1 (evilwizard) Daggers of Darkness 42 (lady in the crowd with conical hat): 1 (sylas) The Keep of the Lich-Lord 187 (Captain Jarmesh): 1 (kieran) Legend of the Shadow Warriors 321 (Quinsberry Woad): 1 (greenspine) The Crimson Tide 176 (magistrate): 1 (Per) Island of the Undead 114 (Greater Ghoul with pirate hat): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Revenge of the Vampire 313 (Doktor Verruckte): 1 (Peter's wife) Bloodbones 98 (fortune teller): 1 (hallucination) Assassins of Allansia 89 (Blackthorn in town guide disguise): 1 (adrius) Khare - Cityport of Traps 312 (slave in wide-brimmed hat): 1 (Peter)
Even though I deliberately didn't include 'helmet' as an acceptable answer in order to narrow down the field a bit, there were still a huge amount of potential answers for this one which makes the two players who went for Warlock's Orc chieftain unlucky with the only clash.
Some eagle-eyed spotting by sylas and Peter, both of whom espied betitfered characters in crowd scenes.
Leaderboard after Q1:
1. Gabe Fandango, evilwizard, kieran, greenspine, trialmaster, hallucination, Per, sylas, Peter, Peter's wife, Wizard Slayer, adrius - 1 2. vastariner, scouserob - 2
Question 2: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A moon
Answers:
The Rings of Kether 31 (the surface of Kether’s moon, Rispin’s End): 3 (Gabe Fandango, greenspine, adrius) The Citadel of Chaos 245 (night scene in courtyard): 2 (vastariner, scouserob) Freeway Fighter 158 (night scene with station-wagon): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Masks of Mayhem 226 (night scene at Lake Nekros): 1 (trialmaster) Daggers of Darkness 298 (moon symbol on one of the phials): 1 (Per) Dead of Night 113 (night scene at ruined tower): 1 (Peter's wife) Legend of the Shadow Warriors 254 (moon symbol on Geomancer's robes): 1 (evilwizard) Spellbreaker 46 (night scene at Mistress Crowfoot's cottage): 1 (kieran) Stormslayer 131 (night scene with Aakor): 1 (sylas) The Shamutanti Hills preamble (crescent moon symbol on map): 1 (Peter) The Shamutanti Hills 76 (night scene with Elvins): 1 (hallucination)
Clever answer corner: Per, evilwizard and Peter all identified moon symbols within illustrations. Not what I had in mind when I set the question but they are nonetheless all depictions of a moon so therefore qualify as correct answers.
Very unlucky triple clash from Gabe Fandango, greenspine and adrius who all displayed the same outside the box thinking by pointing out that in reference 31 of The Rings of Kether you are exploring Kether's moon, and therefore the terrain depicted is that of a moon.
Vastariner and scouserob clash for the second question in a row.
Leaderboard after Q2:
1. evilwizard, kieran, trialmaster, hallucination, Per, sylas, Peter, Peter's wife, Wizard Slayer - 2 2. Gabe Fandango, greenspine, vastariner, scouserob, adrius - 4
Question 3: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A salesperson and their wares
Answers:
Appointment with F.E.A.R. 256 (sweet shop): 2 (Peter, scouserob) The Warlock of Firetop Mountain 97 (old man selling candles): 1 (Wizard Slayer) The Citadel of Chaos 269 (tall man selling dagger): 1 (Gabe Fandango) City of Thieves 224 (JB Wraggins locksmiths): 1 (vastariner) Temple of Terror 196 (Abjul's tent): 1 (Peter's wife) Master of Chaos 91 (Ali Haji-Sheikh's Weapons Store): 1 (greenspine) Moonrunner 340 (Kiennar's Curiosity Shop): 1 (trialmaster) Night Dragon 238 (Neville's shop): 1 (hallucination) Legend of Zagor 112 (Elranel with sack): 1 (kieran) Legend of Zagor 194 (Cohsturre's shop): 1 (evilwizard) Blood of the Zombies 391 (Boris selling storeroom merchandise): 1 (adrius) The Port of Peril 93 (Travis Traynor the travelling trader): 1 (sylas) The Port of Peril 104 (Jethro's Jewels): 1 (Per)
Just the one clash here, but a couple more near misses with players going for different illustrations from Legend of Zagor and The Port of Peril.
Leaderboard after Q3:
1. evilwizard, kieran, trialmaster, hallucination, Per, sylas, Peter's wife, Wizard Slayer - 3 2. Gabe Fandango, greenspine, vastariner, adrius - 5 3. scouserob - 6
Question 4: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A creature sitting astride a living mount
Answers:
The Forest of Doom 396 (masked warrior on horseback): 2 (greenspine, Peter) Daggers of Darkness 42 (Yigenik knight on horseback): 2 (Gabe Fandango, trialmaster) Spectral Stalkers 126 (armoured giant atop a horned war-beast): 2 (hallucination, Per) Island of the Lizard King 139 (lizard man on styracosaurus): 1 (vastariner) Sword of the Samurai 34 (samurai on horseback): 1 (Peter's wife) Chasms of Malice 308 (warrior on koyunlu): 1 (evilwizard) Daggers of Darkness 245 (ice warrior on horseback): 1 (kieran) Armies of Death 241 (knight-guardians of the Twisted Bridge): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Magehunter 179 (dark elf on giant beetle): 1 (sylas) Secrets of Salamonis 196 (hill goblins on dire wolves): 1 (scouserob) Secrets of Salamonis 245 (blood orcs on Tooki war-griffins): 1 (adrius)
Although I could have narrowed the scope a bit by specifying horseback (which was an option several players went for) rather than any living mount, there were still a number of clashes here. However scouserob finally manages to avoid a duplicated answer for the first time!
Leaderboard after Q4:
1. evilwizard, kieran, sylas, Peter's wife, Wizard Slayer - 4 2. trialmaster, hallucination, Per - 5 3. vastariner, Peter, adrius - 6 4. Gabe Fandango, greenspine, scouserob - 7
Question 5: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A grave
Answers:
Creature of Havoc 411 (zombies in graveyard): 3 (hallucination, Peter, Peter's wife) Spellbreaker 293 (skeletons boogeying to the Dance of Death around a freshly dug grave): 3 (evilwizard, greenspine, sylas) Talisman of Death 274 (ghoul in graveyard): 2 (trialmaster, scouserob) Appointment with F.E.A.R. 85 (The Reincarnation emerging from grave): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Daggers of Darkness 334 (Necromancer raising the dead): 1 (adrius) Dead of Night 14 (vision of brother's funeral procession): 1 (Per) Dead of Night 142 (burial of Calbert): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Knights of Doom 214 (knight of Golden Dragon in opened sarcophagus): 1 (kieran) Khare - Cityport of Traps 164 (Deathwraith rising from grave): 1 (vastariner)
Several duplicated answers there shake the leaderboard up a bit. As we hit the halfway stage, kieran and Wizard Slayer remain the only two players to record perfect scores so far. However it is tight at the top with a large number of players still in contention for the win!
Leaderboard after Q5:
1. kieran, Wizard Slayer - 5 2. Per - 6 3. evilwizard, trialmaster, vastariner, sylas, Peter's wife, adrius - 7 4. Gabe Fandango, hallucination - 8 5. Peter, scouserob - 9 6. greenspine - 10
