Question 6: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A creature that is asleep
Answers:
The Forest of Doom 378 (a gnome having a snooze atop a giant mushroom): 2 (Gabe Fandango, vastariner) Caverns of the Snow Witch 168 (dozing herbalist): 2 (greenspine, hallucination) Robot Commando 1 (several Thalossians having a nice long rest in the middle of a crisis): 2 (Per, Peter) City of Thieves 271 (pirates in their bunks): 1 (trialmaster) Island of the Lizard King 195 (goblin on straw mattress): 1 (scouserob) Midnight Rogue 45 (sleepwalker having a wander in his robe): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Vault of the Vampire 159 (Baobhan Sith in a sleep of ages): 1 (evilwizard) Vault of the Vampire 358 (dog napping in front of a wood stove): 1 (sylas) Black Vein Prophecy 392 (Velkos having a kip on a boat): 1 (kieran) The Crimson Tide 137 (Yao snoring contentedly): 1 (Peter's wife) Eye of the Dragon 233 (sleeping black dragon): 1 (adrius)
Nice catch on the sleepwalker from Wizard Slayer, who along with kieran has now opened up a two point lead at the top of the table.
Leaderboard after Q6:
1. kieran, Wizard Slayer - 6 2. evilwizard, trialmaster, Per, sylas, Peter's wife, adrius - 8 3. vastariner - 9 4. Gabe Fandango, hallucination, scouserob - 10 5. Peter - 11 6. greenspine - 12
Question 7: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A spider
Answers:
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain 394 (giant spider): 2 (Peter, Peter's wife) Scorpion Swamp 144 (Master of Spiders and his servants): 2 (vastariner, Wizard Slayer) Stealer of Souls 216 (carving on wall): 2 (kieran, Per) Battleblade Warrior 346 (spider nest containing key): 2 (trialmaster, sylas) Sword of the Samurai 149 (giant trapdoor spider): 1 (greenspine) Portal of Evil 196 (giant spider chasing goblin): 1 (adrius) Siege of Sardath introduction (spider drawings on map): 1 (evilwizard) Siege of Sardath 143 (diagram on astrologer's wall): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Curse of the Mummy 268 (Death spider): 1 (hallucination) Shadow of the Giants 179 (Spider hag crawling with bugs): 1 (scouserob)
Both kieran and Wizard Slayer finally lose their perfect scores. Peter and his wife show they are on the same wavelength with the second question of the round that they have matched with each other.
Similarly to Q2, a few players (Gabe Fandango, evilwizard, kieran and Per) cleverly identified that a representation of a drawing of a spider meets the question criteria as it is depicted in the illustration - unluckily for kieran and Per, they both went for the same example of this!
Leaderboard after Q7:
1. kieran, Wizard Slayer - 8 2. evilwizard, adrius - 9 3. trialmaster, Per, sylas, Peter's wife - 10 4. Gabe Fandango, hallucination, vastariner, scouserob - 11 5. greenspine, Peter - 13
Question 8: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A gun
Answers:
Star Strider 61 (heavily armed squad): 2 (evilwizard, Per) Starship Traveller 236 (your character holding phaser): 1 (vastariner) Space Assassin 20 (guard robot armed with assault blaster): 1 (adrius) Space Assassin 308 (the Deity holds three different guns): 1 (greenspine) Freeway Fighter 49 (chariot driver with double-barrelled machine gun): 1 (Peter's wife) Freeway Fighter 115 (machine gun mounted on dune buggy): 1 (Peter) Rebel Planet 212 (Arcadians with phasers): 1 (kieran) Sky Lord 249 (pot-bellied cut-throat with handgun): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Sky Lord 282 (thunder-gun wielding mutantoid): 1 (hallucination) Howl of the Werewolf 190 (Headless Highwayman with pistol): 1 (sylas) Howl of the Werewolf 478 (Van Richten pointing flintlock pistol): 1 (trialmaster) Blood of the Zombies 35 (machine gun toting scientist): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Blood of the Zombies 312 (Amy with handgun): 1 (scouserob)
Even though there are only a limited number of books that hold possible answers, those that do tend to have multiple examples of them and as a result there's just the one double up here.
Trialmaster noted on submitting his answer from Howl of the Werewolf that he hoped other players would automatically tend towards the sci fi books for their answers. This wasn't quite the case across the board as sylas also went for Howl, but fortunately for them both they both plumped for different pics from the same book.
Vastariner noted a point of interest from his answer of Starship Traveller 236 - the fact that the PC is holding their phaser suggests that they have already made the decision to turn to 45 from the options available in that reference.
Leaderboard after Q8:
1. kieran, Wizard Slayer - 9 2. adrius - 10 3. evilwizard, trialmaster, sylas, Peter's wife - 11 4. Gabe Fandango, hallucination, Per, vastariner, scouserob - 12 5. greenspine, Peter - 14

Question 9: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A creature that is kneeling or on their knees
Answers:
Slaves of the Abyss 26 (the legendary Tasbadh, doer of mighty deeds, slayer of Evil, and seeker of truths collapsed in a heap like a big wimpy git): 3 (kieran, trialmaster, hallucination) Fangs of Fury 156 (prostrate dwarfs): 2 (evilwizard, Peter's wife) Howl of the Werewolf 226 (Meg conducting resurrection ritual): 2 (greenspine, adrius) The Citadel of Chaos 64 (infant humanoids): 1 (Peter) City of Thieves 113 (the left old lady): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Caverns of the Snow Witch 198 (worshippers bowed in supplication before Ice Demon): 1 (vastariner) Temple of Terror 47 (dwarf delivering Gillibran's hammer): 1 (Per) Stealer of Souls 400 (Mordraneth defeated): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Armies of Death 338 (dwarf attacked by shapechanger): 1 (scouserob) The Crimson Tide 1 (your father being cut down by mercenary leader): 1 (sylas)
Not quite such a broad question this time, but a nice selection of answers discovered by everyone. Kieran and Wizard Slayer's neck and neck contest at the top of the table is brought to an end by kieran's treble up answer, giving Wizard Slayer a clear lead going into the final question.
Trialmaster's original answer of Bargo the Wheeler from Midnight Rogue caused me a bit of a headache; looking at it closely it does appear that his legs are missing above the knee, and so therefore can't really be said to be 'on his knees' and is also sitting, rather than kneeling, in his little cart.
Leaderboard after Q9:
1. Wizard Slayer - 10 2. kieran, sylas, adrius - 12 3. Gabe Fandango, evilwizard, Per, vastariner, Peter's wife, scouserob - 13 4. trialmaster - 14 5. hallucination, Peter - 15 6. greenspine - 16
Question 10: Identify a full page internal illustration depicting somewhere within it...A creature bound by rope or chains
Answers:
Deathtrap Dungeon 210 (one handed Ian Livingstone chained in cell): 2 (vastariner, scouserob) Island of the Lizard King 268 ('old man' chained in cell): 1 (Peter) Island of the Lizard King 337 (man tied to post by headhunters): 1 (sylas) Island of the Lizard King 360 (dwarf slave shackled by two-headed lizard man): 1 (Gabe Fandango) Appointment with F.E.A.R. 396 (Drew Swain tied to chair): 1 (trialmaster) Armies of Death 112 (creature chained in the foreground of the pet shop): 1 (hallucination) Master of Chaos 1 (galley slave cowering before orc second mate): 1 (Wizard Slayer) Black Vein Prophecy 79 (tied-up officer with scroll): 1 (adrius) The Keep of the Lich-Lord 383 (column of prisoners being led to pirate ship): 1 (Peter's wife) Spectral Stalkers 115 (elf chained below mouth of Vacavon): 1 (evilwizard) Siege of Sardath 205 (dwarf chained to wall in the background): 1 (kieran) Return to Firetop Mountain 118 (Zoot Zimmer chained in cell): 1 (greenspine) Khare - Cityport of Traps 227 (a rope is tied around one of YOUR hands): 1 (Per)
Congratulations then to Wizard Slayer, who wins on his first attempt at the game and led throughout, only providing a single duplicated answer. Kieran provided his closest competition but stumbled at the penultimate hurdle, and ends up taking the silver medal along with sylas and adrius.
Props also go to vastariner, who set himself the additional challenge of only providing answers from the first ten books and Sorcery!, and despite this extra restriction achieved a respectable mid-table finish.
Hope everyone enjoyed!
Final scores:
1. Wizard Slayer - 11 2. kieran, sylas, adrius - 13 3. Gabe Fandango, evilwizard, Per, Peter's wife - 14 4. trialmaster, vastariner, scouserob - 15 5. hallucination, Peter - 16 6. greenspine - 17

This round was quite interesting -- thanks Petch for hosting, and of course congratulations to Wizard Slayer.
And of course, the answer that I was most pleased with (the moon), turns out to be my worst-scoring answer.
Like minds think alike, eh? I did have a good feeling on this one (even when it turns out we clashed), as well as the following one where nobody else got the unexpected merchant that is Boris (from Blood of the Zombies, who does sell his wares on a later paragraph). Also I did a quick tabulation, and it seems that between all our answers, we have covered a considerably good range of gamebooks (with Daggers of Darkness seeming to be particularly popular, for some reason). Out of the 77, the ones we all missed are (correct me if there's any mistakes):
- (10) House of Hell
- (16) Seas of Blood
- (21) Trial of Champions
- (25) Beneath Nightmare Castle
- (26) Crypt of the Sorcerer
- (28) Phantoms of Fear
- (46) Tower of Destruction
(51) Island of the Undead (edit: mentioned in Q1)
- (55) Deathmoor
- (64) Night of the Necromancer
- (67) The Gates of Death
- (69) Crystal of Storms
- (S3) The Seven Serpents
- (S4) The Crown of Kings
Not sure if it's actually possible to include all the gamebooks for at least one of the questions (any prepared answers you've had from here, Petch)? Perhaps we could give a special mention to anyone that can give a new and unique set of answers from the list here, so there would be a full house

(with Daggers of Darkness seeming to be particularly popular, for some reason). In the earlier rounds, I recall that it tended to be one of the more neglected books, and I think I've gotten quite a fair amount of unique answers when I picked mine from that book. By this point, perhaps a lot of players have caught on to that.

(any prepared answers you've had from here, Petch)?
To be honest, the questions I set for this round were broad ranging enough that for most of them I didn't have any specific examples in mind. Although flicking through the books for inspiration it was Fangs of Fury 156 that made me think of Q9 - which was an answer that a couple of players went for. I noticed Daggers of Darkness was a popular source of answers too, as indeed was Island of the Lizard King, although in the latter case every answer provided from it was unique - lots of pics in that one that satisfied the criteria of several of the questions!

Thanks for running that round petch. (And apologies to vastariner for the frequent double ups. 😬🫣)
Picture hunting through the books was fun, though I spent a ridiculous amount of time searching in vain for tiny little spiders in the background 🕷️, in the mistaken belief that my back up (and final) choice of the Spider Hag would be a popular pick.
Congratulations to Wizard Slayer on the win. 🏆

Excellent contest, thanks! Image hunting seems like a format worth repeating. I must admit I expected several people to get perfect scores and hoping to be one of them (and thinking that my Temple of Terror choice was the most likely to clash, but it didn't). Moon: I started out looking through Kharé for incidental Blanche moons in the artwork, and it didn't occur to me that the map would count, but if it had, we could have had the same (double page) illustration chosen from two books, how would that have been adjudicated? Mount: I thought the Styracosaurus was a bold answer given that I can't think of anything more iconic in this regard, so it's neat it remained unique. Nice catch on the sleepwalker from Wizard Slayer For a couple of seconds there I was wondering if there was a book I missed named Wizard Slayer. Gun: With there being half a dozen SF books each with a dozen or more images of people waving guns around, it's a good thing two people didn't flip to the same random page of the same random book to choose the same goshdarn random illustration, because that would have been silly. Picture hunting through the books was fun, though I spent a ridiculous amount of time searching in vain for tiny little spiders in the background 🕷️, I looked through all of Daggers of Darkness for little spiders, given that McKenna put a completely random little snail in one image, but nope.

If the hanged man counts as being 'bound by rope', that would provide an answer from House.
I'm kind of impressed at how badly I did despite giving unique answers for half of the questions.

The image of Morgana shows someone you believe to be asleep at the time, and who appears to wake up when disturbed, so it might be a matter of definitions.
ETA: On reflection one of the skeletons is certainly wearing a hat.
ETA2: And the girl in the cell is either kneeling or extremely short.

I did think about the girl (I presume the nurse?) but her stance was too ambiguous.
But if I used the sleeping Morgana I would have lost the gnome from FoD, which was also not the greatest for unique pics. Had there been one about mobile vegetables it would have been fine.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time searching in vain for tiny little spiders in the background 🕷️ So did I. I looked especially hard in books that feature dungeons and prison cells (where I always recall seeing spiders and webs in corners in other picture books, and was quite surprised to fine none in FF). But I was happy to find my eventual answer. I very nearly clashed with evilwizard on this one too, as I really considered using the front map illustration, but when I finally found the diagram behind the astrologer I changed my mind. This was my second favourite answer behind the moon one, and I'm glad at least this came out unique. I was also the one made enquiries about whether part-spider creatures are allowed, but when petch announced that it would acceptable in this thread, I thought the idea may draw too much attention from other players, and ended up not using it. Turns out that only 2 players went in that direction. If the hanged man counts as being 'bound by rope', that would provide an answer from House. Apparently, it has to be a living entity - my original answer was the skeletal remains of the tortured prisoner in Return to Firetop Mountain, but it wasn't acceptable. But then, the old man in House of Hell was still up and moving about not long before he was seen hanging (although he probably wasn't alive even then), so I'm not entirely certain if petch would have disqualified him for being dead or undead in such a case. The image of Morgana shows someone you believe to be asleep at the time, and who appears to wake up when disturbed, so it might be a matter of definitions. For that matter, the Baobhan Sith only appeared to be asleep, and was probably very much alert and waiting for her prey, so if petch accepted her as an answer, I think he would likely have accepted Mordanna.

I think I would have adjudged this to be a clash as although it appears in multiple books, it is still the same illustration. As for the House of Hell illustrations, I think I would have probably called that the hanged man illustration would not be acceptable going by the (debatable) logic that once something has died it ceases to be a creature, unless it is subsequently animated or becomes undead. I'd have been okay with the Mordana one, as similarly to the Baobhan Sith she appears to be in a dormant state which could be said to be an undead equivalent of 'sleep' (inasfar as undead creatures can sleep - are vampires truly 'sleeping' in their coffins?). Either could be open to interpretation though which would have made my job a lot more difficult, so I'm glad most players went for more unambiguous answers!

When I made my submission using the map, in case it wasn't accepted, I gave the Astrologer as a back up answer. The other ones I considered were the Giant Spider at reference 19, and the Master of Spiders in Scorpion Swamp. When I made my submission using the map, in case it wasn't accepted, I gave the Astrologer as a back up answer. The other ones I considered were the Giant Spider at reference 19, and the Master of Spiders in Scorpion Swamp. Hey, in my case, I considered the map illustration, used the astrologer's diagram as primary answer, and submitted the Master of Spiders as backup answer, so it was the same 3-way cycles of answers between us! I guess we should both be glad that we end up submitting the answers we did. The text explicitly states that the Baobhan Sith is sleeping in at least 2 references I was going reply that Mordana was also explicitly stated to be asleep in the text, so it was a fair comparison, but then I checked the book, and it turns out that my memory is faulty. The text that says she's asleep is the previous section leading to this one. While the picture still shows an apparently sleeping old lady, the text in the corresponding section already has the PC waking her up and discovering that she's in fact dead.

I forgot to submit a set of backup answers with instructions to use them in case someone else had chosen my primary ones! Back in the day if one of your answers was judged to be invalid, bam! You'd literally have thousands of points, calculated from the number of players, the distribution of answers and the phase of Titan's moon. Your indignant shouts of protest echoing across the plains, attracting only hostile Birdmen. I was going reply that Mordana was also explicitly stated to be asleep in the text, so it was a fair comparison, but then I checked the book, and it turns out that my memory is faulty. The text that says she's asleep is the previous section leading to this one. While the picture still shows an apparently sleeping old lady, the text in the corresponding section already has the PC waking her up and discovering that she's in fact dead. The image arguably shows what you see in the preceding paragraph or equivalently at the very beginning of 139, as a) otherwise you'd be in the picture, and 2) her eyes don't seem to be open yet.

Thank you petch. This was a good idea. I would certainly be up for another of these.
I had some lucky escapes by not going with my first choices, but also vice versa. Once again my wife did better than me.
Knights of Doom ref 214 and Khare ref 164 both show a sarcophagus. Is a sarcophagus a grave?
What is the man in Island of the Lizard King ref 337 tied up with? Can we confirm that it is rope or chain?

Can we confirm that it is rope or chain? With the sarcophagus, I think we're wandering into the realms of ambiguity again, as depending on the source you use I've found definitions for grave as both specifically 'an excavation made in the earth in which to bury a dead body' but also more broadly 'any place of interment'. Due to the uncertainty I erred on the side of leniency here and accepted these answers. Good spot on Island 337 though - on double checking ref 215 confirms that the man was tied with vines, and not rope or chains. My mistake for missing it, so sylas got away with that one

Very chuffed to win at my first attempt at this! A shame I didn't get a perfect score, the one I doubled up on (Master of Spiders) was the one that felt like the biggest risk. You go for something obvious in the hope that nobody else will, knowing the risk that somebody could easily think the same! Especially close, since my second choice (Giant Spitting Spider, Siege of Sardath 19) wasn't picked by anyone.
Thanks to petch for running this, and being so quick to post the results!

I think things have quietened down enough that it's okay for me to put up a new set of questions. Apologies to anybody who doesn't have access to a copy of House of Hell, because on this occasion every question relates to that book. - Describe something that causes the gain of exactly 1 Fear point.
- Name a character you may encounter in or under the house.
- Describe a way of regaining Stamina during the adventure.
- Give a name which is on the name-plate of one of the upstairs rooms.
- List a scoring answer for the torturer’s test that gets less than 5 points.
- Name or otherwise identify an opponent with a Skill score that is an odd number.
- List an item you may use as a WEAPON.
- Identify a liquid you are given the opportunity of drinking in the house.
- Describe a full-page illustration which accompanies a section that you cannot reach in the course of a successful attempt at the book.
- Identify a human whom you may fight (their Skill and Stamina must be listed) during the adventure.
Bear in mind the difference between 'name' and 'identify'. (All the following examples are from an unrelated book so as not to influence participants in this quiz.) If the question says 'name', an actual character name must be given (e.g. 'Yaztromo'), while 'identify' merely requires you to refer to something distinctive about a character (e.g. 'the wizard who sells you stuff before you enter Darkwood Forest'). Where 'identify' is an option, all references to the same character (or whatever is being asked for) will be treated as identical, even if they reference different aspects (so 'the guy who turns you into a frog if you attack him' and 'the man who explains what happened to Gillibran's hammer' would count as the same answer). When submitting answers you may not suggest alternatives in case your first option proves unacceptable. You may change an answer (until the deadline) if you have second thoughts, but must unambiguously indicate that your new answer is replacing the one you previously submitted. The deadline for submitting answers is 23:59 GMT on October 30th.
