Week 41 Return to the Icefinger Mountains (Fighting Fantazine 9) (4 dice) Slaves of the Abyss (4 dice)

Only combats which you win should be included in the list of enemies defeated. Victory can be attained in Return by reaching either section 49 or section 275.

The Crown of Kings Wizard One attempt No guide Stats rolled in order Dead Stats etc: Skill: 6/6 Stamina: -1/17 Luck: 5/9 (rolled 8)
Kills: GUARD GUARD First GUARD
Provisions: 1 Gold: 21 (Parchment, -20) Stone Dust (ROK component?) 3 pebbles (POP component?) (Colletus, -30 (diamond with cross?)) Blessed Hardwood Spear Fire Water potion (...PEP? component?) Sun Jewel (...I forget the spell code.) Pearl Ring (I don't even remember the spell this is for) Pair of Nose Plugs (for NIF) Brass Pendulum (DOZ?) Crystal Orb (FAR) Orange Powder (??? There's NIP or something, the go fast spell, but that's yellow powder?) Medicinal potion (for DOC or is it good on its own?) Holy Water (that's the resurrection spell, right?) Cloth skullcap (TEL?) Secret door password, -92
Writeup: There's a good case to be made for playing this one as a warrior, as lacking various items from previous books I'm that much less likely to be able to employ magic-based solutions due to missing a key spell component. That said, an 8 skill warrior isn't likely to get very far either. Frankly with a total of 9 on 4d6 these are some of the worst stats I've seen and I don't think it matters what I pick.
In any case, I have no prior experience with this book, though I did watch a playthrough of a computer game adaptation of the series last year. From what I recall the sections corresponding to the first two books seemed to broadly match what I saw in my attempts at those, but the Seven Serpents section went way off the rails so I'm not sure how much help those vague memories will be in the final book, but they're all I have to go on. I think I've also heard it's possible to get sent to the start of the Shamutanti Hills, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.
---
Previously, on An Analander's Fever Dreams: Analand Council: Seek ye the mark crown of kings. Giant: *crush crush* Kharé: *circle circle* Acid Beetle: *spray spray*
Finally arriving at the approach to the Fortress of Mampang the Analander shakes his head, trying to clear the fog obscuring the memories of just how he managed to get here intact, to no avail. He checks his pack to find two provisions and twenty coins. Recognition flashes; aren't these the self same supplies he packed at the start of his journey, when he left faraway Analand? How can he have come this far without so much as touching them? Unnerved, he focuses on what little he is certain of: his quest, to retrieve the Crown of Kings from the Mampang Fortress ominously breaking the skyline in the distance, and knowledge of his spellbook, left back in Analand. Or only recently discarded?
The rumbling of thunder returns his thoughts to the present. He needs to find shelter in this inhospitable land from the oncoming storm, and somewhere to spend the night at that. Pressing up the faint path marked only by hoofprints he finds three caves, side by side, each offering the tantalising promise of shelter and safety for the night with nary to differentiate them bar their size and where the hoofprints lead.
As he stands paralysed by indecision, visions of a faraway world, so different and yet hauntingly similar to this one tug at his memories. His lips whisper, "one of the caves has a loud roaring, but it's just the wind. The far cave holds a diseased hooved person I should meet, but not touch. They're friendly."
As soon as it began the moment was gone, and with a sense of purpose he set towards the farthest of the three caves. Despite the vision he still feels a chill as he sees the figure at the back of the cave. He calls out, but the figure shows no sign of response. Nerves get the better of him and, losing all self-control, he grabs the figure by the shoulder to discover that it is already dead. Still concerned about disease, though not yet feeling any effects to suggest he's contracted anything from contact, he leaves to seek shelter in the windy cave rather than risk staying the night here.
Silently bemoaning the visions, or perhaps his memory, for their differences to the reality he is experiencing, he finds a glass vial in the back of the small cave. He casts about his memories for guidance, but finds nothing. Gulping at the prospect of facing the unknown, and perhaps truly having his fate in his own hands for the first time, he removes the stopper. Excitement rises in his chest as within is secreted a length of parchment, though this fades quickly to puzzlement as he realises he has no hope of reading it.
Perhaps a friendly figure could help, unlikely as they may be in Xamen and beyond, perhaps even one of these goat people, should he find a living one, and so he stores it safely. Glancing at his meagre supply of food he sighs, knowing that while he's at full strength he needs to ration what little he has, and settles in for the night with an empty stomach.
Morning arrives and his stomach protests in full force. He scavenges some mundane spellcasting supplies from the cave before setting out to once again tackle the bleak, eerie uplands. He comes to a crossroads from which he espies a bridge to one side, while the path continues upwards in the other direction. Again a vision rises unbidden, imploring him to avoid the bridge as it is trapped and that the goatmen live up the hill. He pauses, wondering how true to life these visions will prove, but cannot deny that while the details may have differed, their guidance did not lead him astray at the caves.
Dizzy and exhausted from a steep uphill climb, he is jolted to alertness by a spear narrowly missing, striking a nearby boulder. Taking cover, he looks for his attackers and spots on an outcropping above him, upon which are standing a pair of goat people, readying more spears. His thoughts flash back to the corpse he discovered in the cave last night, and the recognition is certain.
His instincts scream at him that he needs to cast a spell, to counterattack or to escape, but the visions had been insistent that these people were friendly and that this is not the way. He calls out, trying to sound calm, telling the figures of the body he discovered last night. A moment passes before they thank him for the news, inviting him to their village. He graciously accepts, glad to have found some hospitality in this hostile land.
Another arduous climb once again drains his energy, but after what feels like an age the satyr village comes into view on the mountainside. His escorts waving away the guards, he finds he is being led to their elder. Mulling over what he should say to her, he remembers the parchment he found the previous night. An uncomfortable length of time passes as she reads it in silence, but finally she rests, satisfied.
Urged to retell the story of his journey thus far he does so, but the details ring hollow to him. Did he really collect all four spell lines in Kharé? It feels to him more as though he is retelling a story he once heard, but he had to have arrived in Xamen somehow. Regardless, the satyrs enjoy his stories before finally the elder waves them away and turns to him, a serious expression on her face. She warns him of Mampang, of the four deadly Throben Doors, and bids him seek the holy man Colletus for aid. Finally, she offers an array of supplies and bids him farewell.
The day's travel had been hard and long. While Mampang's gates loomed ever closer, it had been... how long since he'd last ate? Too long. Stopping a moment to eat one of his precious rationed supplies he spots a message written onto the rock wall. By a stroke of luck, or perhaps the whims of fate or something yet further unknowable, the message is from the very holy man he is seeking, and leaves instructions on how to find him. He returns to the path once more, feeling invigorated by the filling meal and the lucky find.
Once more he finds himself at a sort of crossroads as he eyes a rope that he could swing himself across a gap with. His eyes narrow in confused recollection, "isn't that a trap?" he murmurs, unsure where this has come from; there was no associated vision, or perhaps it was too faint. He leaves the rope untouched, shaking his head and hoping he hasn't passed up an invaluable asset in doing so.
Another bridge comes into view. Colletus's message comes to mind, and he signals for the holy man
Okay, it's getting late on Sunday night, I'm really tired, and when I started with this prose writing style I was expecting to die really quickly. I'm not going to finish in time if I keep this up, so it's going to be curt from here on.
I get the spear blessed and he gives me some stuff. The fortress is spooky. The guards spot me and very nearly kill me. Can I get a cheer for skill 5? Libra says she can't help me in the fort so I have her heal me now. I'm not sure how this interacts with the spooky fortress skill deduction. Hopefully I won't be getting into fights either way. I DOP the door, hoping it isn't magically locked this far out, to no avail.
I then run face-to-face with a guard at the door, and I'm not keen on my spell options. FOG and TEL are right out. DUM makes someone clumsy, but will that affect only one target? Is DIM the one that makes them stupid or is it a red herring? I think that's still single target if it's real. WOK's a real spell but I can't remember what it does. It it one of the defensive ones? I'm not sure a wall would help me here - I give it even odds the book declares I put a wall up around myself and have to just stand there until it wears off and the guards stab me, but I guess I'll give it a shot over any of the others.
Aw, it's the small shield spell. Still it's probably the best effect I'm getting. I'm also making the decision that even though narratively it's a penalty for the fortress being spooky that should still be in effect (maybe? Am I inside at this point?), mechanically it's still a reduction that should be nullified by Libra's aid, so I'm fighting this at my full glory of 6 skill. I'm not expecting it to help.
It did not.
Okay, so I know not to sneak in like that again! I get the feeling I probably got everything completely right up until the guards, which means replaying might get a little tedious as that was a fairly long intro. On the other hand I guess there weren't any dice rolls so I could probably note the inventory items and such and just elect to start myself looking at Mampang in future.
Well, that's 0/4 in Sorcery for me; to be expected, though I'm still a little miffed at how short my Seven Serpents stint was compared to the others. Ah well, they were fun.

Around 24 hours to get in results for week 41.
Week 42 The Resurrection of the Dead (Fighting Fantazine 1) (4 dice) Beneath Nightmare Castle (5 dice – standard stats plus Willpower)
Please state if you use a guide, if you allocate dice at character creation rather than taking them as they fall, or if you make more than one attempt at a book. Only combats which you win should be included in the list of enemies defeated.
Kieran and terrysalt both won an identical number of fights in Crown, and six of those were the same combats. For the other one, though, terrysalt went up against the end boss, while kieran took on a mutated Goblin. Such are the peculiarities of the book that kieran’s unique opponent was the tougher of the two, so he gets the bonus. Week 40 scoring 1st: hallucination - 14 (stats bonus 4 + victory bonus 10) 2nd: terrysalt – 11 (stats bonus 1 + victory bonus 10) 3rd: evilwizard – 9 (stats bonus 4 + closest to victory bonus 5) 4th: kieran – 6 (stats bonus 1 + most fights won bonus 5) 5th: kalieum - 5 (stats bonus 5)

Beneath Nightmare Castle
Sk 7 St 21 Lu 8 WP 10
Stats as rolled No guide 1 attempt
Item: Talisman of Loth
Kills: 6 Swordsmen, Ogre, 1st Southern Swordsman.
Failed in fight with 2nd Southern Swordsman just before reaching Senya.
Had a go at this as the dice rolled despite poor stats. Failed a luck roll early on which prevented me from obtaining the 1st part of the Trident and from then on it was a case of trying to get as far as possible with no real hope of winning. Managed to get the 2nd Southern Swordsman down to 2 Stamina but succumbed to a higher skill opponent despite wearing the Talisman.
I have always found BNC a fun, atmospheric gamebook though.

Some astonishingly bad dice rolling saw me only hitting the corpse lizard once before he hit me 8 times.

As the clocks go back tonight, you have around 25 hours to get in results for week 43.
Week 44 Starship Traveller (dice depend on gameplay – see below) Dead of Night (4 dice)
Please state if you use a guide, if you allocate dice at character creation rather than taking them as they fall, or if you make more than one attempt at a book. Only combats which you win should be included in the list of enemies defeated.
Owing to Starship Traveller’s being winnable without any rolling of dice, there are some special rules to keep it from becoming an automatic 10+ points for everyone.
1. When the stats bonus is calculated, only stats that were used during play get counted. If a member of the crew gets into a fight, you may include their Skill and Stamina. If one of them never fights, but does make a Skill roll, just give their Skill. The ship's stats likewise count for nothing unless you get into ship-to-ship combat.
2. You must keep track of all the planets visited in the course of the book, and list them when posting your results. If you make it to section 340, you get 2 victory points (to a maximum of 10) for each planet on which your character sets foot where you did not acquire part of the information required for finding the correct black hole. You will have to deviate from the ultra-safe path listed in the solution thread in order to score anything.
3. In the unlikely event that everybody fails as a consequence of taking risks in order to qualify for points under rule 2 (or a fatal error in the maze), planets visited will similarly be used (scoring 1 point per planet, to a maximum of 5) to determine the number of bonus points scored by the player(s) who got furthest through the book.
Note that at section 223, the section numbers given are the wrong way round: a successful roll means that you should turn to 46, while a failed roll should lead to 129. This is also true of 326: rolling below or equal to your Skill should lead to 266, while exceeding it would take you to 12.
Week 42 scoring 1st: terrysalt – 19 (stats bonus 4 + victory bonus 10 + most fights won bonus 5) 2nd: hallucination - 16 (stats bonus 1 + victory bonus 10 + most fights won bonus 5) 3rd: evilwizard – 12 (stats bonus 2 + victory bonus 10) 4th= kieran – 4 (stats bonus 4) 4th= trialmaster – 4 (stats bonus 4) 6th: kalieum - 2 (stats bonus 2)
Running totals 1st: evilwizard - 577 2nd: terrysalt - 571 3rd: hallucination - 519 4th: King Gillibran - 287 5th: kieran - 184 6th: peasantscribbler - 76 7th: kalieum - 66 8th: juniorhornet - 44 9th: nathanh – 33 10th: trialmaster - 18
