Assigned stats: No Guide: Yes Attempts: 1
items: 7 provisions, horn, diamond, tiny knife, crown, tooth, orb, yarn

I am always surprised at how short these ones are. I easily passed both luck tests and the only fight I encountered couldn't have possibly killed me. An astonishingly easy win.

Items: Sword, Backpack, Potion of Fortune, Mark of True Sight, Horn, Diamond, Tiny Knife, Crown, Tooth, Orb, Ball of Yarn
Kills: Redcap?*
Guide used, no allocation, 1 attempt, victory
*I played this purely using the solution, after Round 5, the Redcap had 4 Stamina remaining - I won round 6, however the solution does not say if you should kill it or not. So I tested Luck to see if I would have killed it and passed the Luck test. I played the rest of the adventure as if I had spent the Luck point, and passed the final Luck test. If the adventure did not need the Redcap to be killed, I wouldn't have spent that Luck point to kill it.

If it turns out I was meant to kill the Redcap, I'll redo the fight and edit my post if needed. I had full stats when I encountered it so it won't be hard to replicate.

The Luck test ends the Redcap fight one way or another - if you are Lucky, you compel him to flee (which constitutes a win), and if Unlucky, you get skewered.
Rather awkwardly, the adventure makes no provision for the possibility of killing Redcap before the 6 rounds are up, even though it's clearly possible even without using Luck to increase the effectiveness of wounds.

The replay penalty makes no difference for two reasons: 1) It only affects the victory/closest to victory bonus, which you didn't get because evilwizard won the book. 2) Choosing to replay automatically brings the penalty into play (if you get a victory-related bonus) even if you end up going with your first attempt. This doesn't seem to line up with what you said when I asked about multiple attempts at Crypt of the Sorcerer, where I got docked 4 points for replays despite none of the three characters getting farther than the Rad-Hulks IIRC, and definitely not getting any closest to victory bonus. In any case, Creature of Havoc 1 attempt Stats rolled in order No guide (though I have a partial self-made map) Didn't hold onto an important item. Stats etc: Skill: 12/12 Stamina: 18/18 Luck: 10/11
Items: 337 scroll Pendant (secret door detetction) Crystal Club (333) (Ring of Darramouss Slaying) 2 gp Elven dust coating?
Info: Tell legionnaire 29 Gat H'Oulie has escaped with the ring to the forest of spiders. (+29 to reference when I find him)
Kills: HOBBIT ARMOURED KNIGHT First FLESH-FEEDER Second FLESH-FEEDER Third FLESH-FEEDER STRONGARM WARRIOR THIEF WARRIOR FIGHTER IN LEATHER ARMOUR First BLOOD ORC Second BLOOD ORC MANIC BEAST
Kind of brief writeup: Back in 2015 or so I got a set of ten Wizards Books FF books, and started trying to go through them all legitimately from scratch - no guides, no info beyond vague recollections, nothing I didn't put together myself. After blundering my way to a first-try victory at Stormslayer I was ground to a halt by Creature of Havoc. Despite countless attempts, and eventually mapping, I never got out of the caves, eventually putting the book down for 'a while', which turned out to be until today. Still, that makes it the book I've got the most recent experience with. I was surprised when I saw another poster's comment that with a guide and decent skill they'd had an easy victory, when my recollection was of being attritioned down during the cave sequence even with good stats. This prompted a better read of the rules, where I think I'd been getting the instant death mechanic wrong - I'd still been resolving the combat round and taking a hit at the same time as killing the opponent if my total was lower. It's also possible my mapped out route took me through more fights than necessary; as I recall it was a pretty circuitous route that tagged everything that sounded like it could prove important. Which leads me to the first problem I'm encountering. The First Problem The poor quality of my best picture-taking method at hand aside ("screenshot of webcam preview"), this map is a complete mess. I had no idea how much space I'd need in various directions or how many exits a node could have or how they might link up, so there're some small one squeezed in, some arrows go all over the place, it's not always clear which node my (hard to read) notes are attached to, and some nodes 'teleport' to the back side of the sheet of paper when I just ran out of room. If memory served I'd intended to go over the correct route in pen when I'd finished the book, but without a completion proving what is and isn't necessary I never got to that part. Also at one point I apparently got to section 140 and just stopped. Neither it nor any of the connecting sections are marked as instant deaths, nor is there a combat marked in any of them, so I don't know what's up with that. It's at the very end of the explored section so I might not get there to find out this go, but I've rolled good stats so I'd say I'm in with a shot if I can just figure out this map. I've stared at it a while and I think I'm getting an idea. The book starts with nearly 20 pages of backstory, dwarfing every other FF book I can think of. Some of I know how it ties into the book, some I suspect may be helpful should I ever find my way to the surface, and some is likely just set dressing. While the background outlines some magical vapours having been stolen by noted villain Zharradan Marr and how various adventurers have been sent to retrieve them, the character in this book is no such individual. As the first section unfolds it is quite clear that I am some manner of subterranean beast and I quickly stumble upon an injured or dying dwarf and am faced with a decision. Unfortunately that decision is really 'kill the dwarf, or get stabbed then kill the dwarf'. Following this I have another decision that boils down to 'loot the body, or have my character decide it doesn't care about whatever I chose and it loots the body'. It's quite a while before I actually get to make any choices, as the book drives home by having me roll dice instead of making choices for the next while. It's entirely possible to hit one of four different instant deaths before you have any actual say in the matter. In any case, the dwarf had a message on him. It's annoying to read and as far as I can tell doesn't tell you anything useful. I do recall thinking Swineherd of yore was some sort of condemnation, but given Yore is mentioned as a location in the backstory the dwarf probably was actually a pig farmer. Pig farmer arsonist. This is who they're sending to recover the 'bad guy will become supremely powerful if he keeps these' items? The dice rolls briefly take me down the path to instant deaths, but the book's fairly generous in the odds of getting onto the correct path, whereupon I bust into another chamber and start mauling an adventuring party. Despite the prodigious skill difference between me and the unarmed HOBBIT he manages to tie the second round and I have to spend luck to kill it in time to get more favourable odds of avoiding the last instant death in this section. Luck prevails and I actually get to play the book. Interrupting the shbmbn before he can enslave me, I then make short work of the ARMOURED KNIGHT. Looting the tasty tasty flesh off their corpses I carry on and realise the dice rolling section continues on farther than I had remembered. Still, the dice are kind and I avoid any more trouble on my way to wisdom, at which point I'm immediately faced with my favourite decision in gamebooks: a blind east/west choice. Speeding this up a little because there's nothing interesting to read in 'I stare at my map and pick what I think is the correct choice' several times, I get the pendant, come very close to failing a luck test vs instant death with 11 luck, note a weird 'if you are able to' clause on gaining 1 luck 3 sections after the luck test with I don't think any other way of getting there, and find my map doesn't note everything. Namely, I'm faced with the choice of getting a shield or some sort of weapon. A later node has a Rhino Man noted on it, and I think there's something to do with a shield there and I don't recall the weapon having a use that I found, but there could easily be something that'd only harmed by... malachite, or whatever. I choose the weapon and hope I make it to a point where I can learn which was correct. Anyway, I kill some more hapless adventurers for the ability to read and talk, get a quest from a rhino man (no mention of a shield here), kill some orcs, and get the ring of Darramouss slaying. I then made what I believe to be the mistake of giving it back to the guy who had it as I hadn't been told a section number change for using it yet and figured he had to activate it first or something, but I think I've just screwed myself there. I avoid a section I simply labelled "cursed", shake my head at what I've mapped as another non-choice, stand in some elven dust and find that I apparently successfully mapped that one secret passage without a proper clue somehow. This comes right up to where my mapping ends, and... ah. I assume the hidden link I have mapped from section 90 to 140 is using the ring of Darramouss slaying, which would mean I got to that point, used the ring, and just stopped? Regardless, I lack the ring this time and I rather suspect it's impossible to get out of this encounter without it. I try to run, but the dice finally decide it's time to let me go. I suspect passing the luck test would've also lead to my demise anyway. Well, I technically got to map an extra couple of sections so I guess something came out of this, though it's a bit annoying I lost the ring. I agonised over that decision for a good while, as I had this nagging feeling giving it back was a mistake. I do wonder if the caves are mappable in a more conventional manner. I recall there being some sort of sentient bottomless pit you can approach from either side, which suggests a contiguous layout to those sections.

With rules that only come into play occasionally, it's easy to lose track of the specifics. On this occasion I went back through the thread to check exactly what had been said before, and found these statements: I'm going with a 2-point reduction of the victory bonus per repeat attempt (but will never give a negative bonus - if you try three times and fail each time, you won't end up punished for your persistence). If you make multiple unsuccessful attempts, you can report whichever you prefer, so long as you indicate how many times you tried. Only the 'closest to victory' bonus will be reduced, so if you try 3 times but someone else still does better than your best attempt, you won't lose points from your stats bonus. I should have checked properly when you asked regarding Crypt, but I went with what turned out to be faulty memories. Sorry about that. Recalculating your score for week 35 in light of the precedent set in earlier weeks, I have added the points that were docked in error, so your running total goes up to 74. Apologies for the error.

Queen of Shades One attempt Stats rolled in order No guide Killed by a dog man Stats etc: Skill: 6/7 Stamina: -1/19 Luck: 8/9
Items: Gold Pieces: 5 (starting 7) Writeup: It's time for another go at a Fighting Fantazine adventure. I'd like to add more preamble, but my experience with any of these is entirely limited to the single attempts at each of Lords of Stone and Sister Angela's Veil earlier in this thing which gave me significantly different experiences. With the stats I've rolled I'm hoping this one is more akin to Lords than Veil.
The rules mention I can call on Libra for help once a la Sorcery, but it neglects to give any more details. I remember in Sorcery this could remove a disease, fully restore your stats, or do something contextual when prompted. Even if it's only going to be when prompted in this adventure it'd be nice if it clarified this.
In any case, the story this time is that I'm playing one of Analand's sightmasters who's joined a group of tomb raiding treasure hunters from Khare, and after recently plundering an ornate mirror members of the gang have started mysteriously dying. The suggestion is that the mirror is cursed, and my supposition is that I'm going to have to return it to its owner's tomb before all this is done. The first problem with this is that the mirror is in the possession of the group's leader while he's trying to sell it. The second problem is the pair of assassins in my room.
Grabbing my quarterstaff I try to fight them, but their blades are strange and knock off a point of skill when they hit me. I'm afforded the opportunity to beseech Libra for aid, which solves that question straight away, and is an option of which I avail myself. Libra appears, chastises me for grave robbing and basically confirms the plot, but her presence drives off the spooky magic assassins, and I at least survive the night.
The next day starts with me meeting the two other surviving party members to explain things. It turns out the mirror's already been sold (or loaned out to tempt a sale except we can't just go 'actually we're not selling it' or something, it doesn't quite make sense to me) so we squabble and everyone has a different idea of how to deal with the issue - return the mirror, find powerful magic to stop the curse that sends the assassins after us, or ask one of the party leader - Fox's - contacts for advice.
If this were a full sized gamebook I'd like to think there would be three disparate plotlines you could follow all potentially leading to success, but with limited section numbers I rather suspect the second option will prove a dead-end and I'm hoping the third will lead to the first but armed with more information. On the way we're confronted by a group of dog men in an alley, and it turns out our boss has made an enemy of the contact we're headed to meet. I'm given the option to flee at leave Fox to his fate, but I stand my ground, whereupon I'm killed by a skill 7 stamina 5 dog man.
I didn't get to see much of this one, but what I did see seemed compelling and without obvious flaws, making for the first Fantazine adventure I'm wanting to have another go at.

Clash of the Princes - The Warrior's Way
Sk 12 St 18 Lu 12
Assigned stats: no No guide 1 attempt
It had been many years since I had even attempted this and I had no recollection of it whatsoever. Despite strong stats, the build up of tough fights led to my eventual undoing against the Vampire. Greenspine and frenzy players: Might i suggest that the gamebooks for Week 52 be announced ahead of the silly season, say, tomorrow night? Would that be ok?
Also, a question. Are we stopping at week 52 or will we also have a 53rd?

I was planning on listing the final titles (yes, just 52 weeks this year) tomorrow night anyway, as my internet access will be patchy or non-existent over the Christmas period.
