REBEL PLANET
1st try - 10/20/12 - Felt like I did all the right stuff with Bellatrix (but we'll see..), however, on the next planet, I stole a grenade and wandered round in circles in a cellar and got killed.
2nd try - 8/18/8 - On thesecond planet, I got some discs and on my way back to my hostel,i bumped into the Street Fighter and he killed me.

OK, so reading the solution, I was stupid with my clues and was meant to add them to the reference I was on(rather than just add the two like I was doing). So therefore, I would have succeeded on my 5th try!
So Not a fail after all!!
Still not keen on the book though ,no' my cup of tea Isuppose

3rd try - 7/20/12 - Crappy skill, I was killed by guards right at the start
4th try - 12/16/9 - Finally ended up on the third planet. I mind from a load of playthrough years ago that there is a strange encounter I must make to succeed. - By a total fluke,I find the buzzard and then the strange shadow man, I get some great info and when I reach a dome, I try to sneak in and get ambushed.... so close , I reckon!!
5th try - 7/17/11 - Crappy skill again, I get killed by a couple of arcadians....
6th try - MAX STATS - I follow the same route as my 4th shotty. I get all the info I need. My poor wee brain (as I've said before, I'm not wise) but working out the code with its binary and decimal stuff was a real struggle for me, but I get the right code , collect the explosive from the vault and save the day!!!
That was a toughie (but quite satisfying)

DEMONS FROM THE DEEP Ahhh, better, a nice straightforward fun book... 1st try - 12/17/8 - I ended up seven black pearls , however, I never had any means to find the pirates, so although I survived , it was a 'poor' ending. 2nd try - 11/21/7 - Aha, I found the dolphin this time! I ended up with seven black pearls again, which meant I had to fight Bloodaxe, but with my skill boosted to 12 by Cyrano, a fight with him (and the Kraken) was doable - soI won!! Short and sweet adventures, a very pleasant (if lightweight) gamebook.  |

SWORD OF THE SAMURAI
1sttry -11/21/9 - Nice stats - I cant remember much of this book. I took the Heroic leaping skill. I do mind that theres an easy route and a harder route but not sure which is which. So I go east. I get into a bit of trouble in a wee village , meet some kappa then get crushed in a wee cave....
2nd try 8/16/8 -Ok, east seems tricky. I go the other way and try and help people in a village. Sadly I encounter three samurai with similar stats tome, so I die...
3rd try 8/14/12 - I decide to avoid the village this time on account of my crappy stats. However, I then get killed by the undead samurai later on.
4th try 7/9/12 - That is hopeless. I send my useless wee guy into the self proclaimed shoguns castle on a suicide mission and get killed while taking too long to fight a jailer.
5th try - 11/15/8 - Better. I sort of the problems in the village, gain a shifty companion, go to the castle and succeed. I eventually reach the hub. I gain 3 allies. However, they are rubbish so I get killed by a toad.

Final shottie
I have a good think first. The route I took seemed pretty linear and I couldnt think where else I could have picked up certain objects I needed for the hub.
I go the other way.
This was a great idea. I end up in a place called Spiders fen and get eaten by a kraken.
How annoying... I enjoyed my playthroughs though, and if I hadn't limited myself to six shots ant this time I would have had another few goes certainly
Book 20 - FAIL
I didn't expect that!
Trial next, I know EXACTLY what to expect there!

TRIAL OF CHAMPIONS
I THINK I remember quite a bit of this book, but perhaps I am mistaken...
1st shot - 8/18/19 - Ach jings - what is the point of those stats? Surprisingly I manage to kill the Easterner, but my stamina took a battering so I was killed by the fighting slave.
2nd shot - 7/23/7 - Oh perfect.... Killed by the bonecrusher by failing a skill test.
3rd shot - 11/20/19 - Ok, a bitty better. At least I got into the dungeon this time. However, I didn't last long and was killed by the Coldclaw.
4th try - 7/14/8 - Really duff rolls ..... Killed right at the start by failing a skill roll and losing the race.
5th try - 12/23/11 - Very good! Ok, I have a decent nosy around the dungeon. I find 4 gold rings the 'set one' clue, but unfortunately I get trapped because I don't have a file..... Now, I wonder where I can find one on my final MAX STATS playthrough?....

TRIAL OF CHAMPIONS - MAX STATS
6th try - aaarrrgh - Using my map, I tried to visit as many locations as possible whilst avoiding the teleportation room and not straying too far from where I knew some of the gold rings where. This worked quite well as I ended up with seven gold rings, but unfortunately no FILE again so I died at the same spot as last time
BOOK 21 - FAIL !!!!!!

ROBOT COMMANDO
The second FF book i ever owned - haven't played it since then, I'm not surprised...
This is the dullest gamebook I have ever played (so far) , there is far too much to take note of and the story is dull and the hub sequences repetitive and ,well, crap.
I'm probs going to be a few days with this one, I've had two shotties tonight and cant face a third!
1st try - 8/20/12 - I made a blue potion - brilliant! - then I pressed a red button in a lift and died.
2nd try 10/17/10 - I was killed by two tripod robots because I forgot that I had the opportunity to escape.

If I mind right - Ki-rin, tatsu & the golden company... That sounds exactly right. Although I can understand the logic of the gameplay, it is a bit of a flaw in that book that a dragon, a whole division of battle-hardened warriors and Lionel Richie can come up short against overgrown pond-life. See also: a giant flaming bird and a woman who can shoot lightning bolts at will - because do you know what happens to a toad when it gets struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else.  I think you need the sabre-tooth on that path. Anyway it's still a great book. |

As I recall ( Sword spoiler) Heroic Leaping provides the only way of evading the combat which provides the item necessary for recruiting the ally you need against that pesky toad, so that was absolutely the worst skill to choose. |

ROBOT COMMANDO
3rd try - 12/18/10 - I try a few other cities, I reckoned I was in with a chance when I used the blue potion in a storm but nope. I went to capitol city and tried to grab some treasure and got killed.
4th try - 9/22/7 - I found the city of pleasure, it had a nice clue regarding an invisibility cloak- excellent, before going to the dinosaur preserve I had at look at the city of jungle and sank into a swamp.....
5th try - 10/20/12 - I have the clue about the baddies duelling ritual, I have the invisibility cloak, I go up to Minos and kill him while I wear it. This is a bad move coz then I get killed!

Yep, even though Minos is a tough guy, my intact luck meant I could sneak through to victory!

I know there are 2 other endings, but I genuinely have no desire to play this gamebook again - the worst of the first 22 imho.

MASKS OF MAYHEM The third ff book I ever got , and also my favourite - I love the story and the illustrations....... But, obviously NOT the gameplay. I have played this so often , I know about 95% of the route (I think) Who wants to bet that the 'alligator dice roll' will prevent me from winning through? (on top of the numerous succeed or die luck tests and the 1 in 3?? chance of dying in a fire.........) I'll have a couple of goes tonight |

1st shot - 8/22/10 - Started well, met galrin, fought some spriggans, met elves, managed to beat the wight and get his braw sword. Found the mine, got the sceptre, met the doragars, then failed a luck test and fell down a chasm on my way back...... grrrrr

2nd shot - 12/16/9 - Bizarrely I succeeded with all my luck rolls this time, I met Hever and even got his horn (god knows why), I survived the fire and of course FAILED THE ALLIGATOR ROLL. Damn - may as well keep playing though. I spend lots of money on fun things with the trader, and make it to the mountains, however, I take a wrong turn in some tunnels and die horribly.... (But I was playing a doomed game anyway!)

It's funny, I really like Robot Commando. I do think there's too much note-taking and some of the cities aren't that interesting, but the gameplay is very balanced and original and I love the non-linearity and multiple endings. It'd be interesting to see what other people think. |

4th try - 12/17/12 - This time I got burnt in the fire after failing the dice roll.
5th try - 12/19/8 - Failed a luck roll in the doragar mine and fell down the chasm again.

Apparently they came out only a year apart so quite possible especially as Robin seems to like his references - Star Wars and Star Trek references in Rebel Planet; references to other FF books in Phantoms of Fear; and Super Mario references in Deathmoor. |

Yeah it certainly has its pluses and occasionally I quite enjoy it when I'm in the mood, but I far prefer Scorpion Swamp when it comes to the non-linear approach. Robot Commando just feels a bit too empty for me. But I enjoy all the books to some extent. |
