4th shot - 10/18/11 - Killed by Crystal Warrior
5th shot - 7/20/10 - Hopeless stats ! - Killed by the Skeleton Lord
6th shot - MAX stats!! - Was tough with the crystal warrior (I wonder where the stone club is?) anyway, I (just) beat him and won through!!
SUCCESS
Chasms Of malice next - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH

Chasms of Malice took me 57 attempts and I had to bend the rules quite seriously. I hope you have better luck...

I doubt it! The stupid one strike combat will finish me off most of the time i'm sure....
Re Midnight Rogue - stupid me overlooked that you get a stone club after fighting the skeletons, which means I would probably have completed the book on the 4th try!

I lost 6 characters in a row in One-Strike Combat at one point. It was painful.

One-Strike Combat is one of the few times in gamebooks where I feel that cheating is totally acceptable.

CHASMS OF MALICE
1st try - 8/14/10 - I couldn't recall if you need decent stats or not.... turns out you do. I got killed early on by a 'Griphawk' (skill 9)
2nd try - 7/18/9 - Oh dearie me. Killed early on again by Churka the Kuddam. (skill 10)
3rd try - 12/19/11 - Aha! Perhaps I can get on a bit this time? I killed two Kuddam, then failed one strike combat against an orc!
4th try - 9/20/8 - This time,I found the 'famous inn' I went on and found an old man who showed me some runes (which I hope wont be essential beacause I cant make head nor tail of them), however, I went through a succession of doors and an icicle fell on my head..
So, this book is entirely set underground, correct? It is so easy to forget that because it is so poorly written/described. Anyway, two more goes tomorrow, I have a feeling i'm not going to get very far!

5th try - 10/21/9 - I got stuck in some tree roots and failed. Apparently I got in ok but couldn't get out again - ridiculous!
6th try - max stats - I thought, I was doing well, I avoided lots of combats, and was told I was entering a 'critical phase' of my journey. I then had to run from some Orcs. I had to roll one strike combat against two of them, so I died...
FAILURE!!!!!!!!!

I wonder how much some of the gamebooks were play-tested sometimes.... The lack of playtesting and proofreading in FF books is terrible. Books like Revenge of the Vampire and Blood of the Zombies show a serious lack of effort went into making a lot of the books good (and still does).

FREEWAY FIGHTER. Its been said many times before i'm sure but the illustrations are the crappiest and least exciting I've ever seen, especially the one with the guy giving you a wee wave through his car window - how thrilling! Still loving this thread, but I shall add a little context to this one. Apparently the illustrations were completed in just nine days after the previous illustrator's work was rejected. (I wonder what those dismissed images looked like?!?) Anyway, doing that many illustrations in a nine day rush is pretty epic so I have some sympathy for the artist. Three a day or something like that? I'm actually quite impressed haha. I'm not sure I would have wanted that job.

Awesome. McCaig is great isn't he! I don't think they rejected McCaig's work though. I think he just had other jobs that meant he couldn't do it, so they got someone else whose contributions were rejected at the last moment. Bulmer was then pulled in to save the day. I 'think' that was the case. Thanks for sharing the McCaig pic. I can never see enough of his art.

Yeah, me too. Something for Jonathan Green to dig out perhaps? I have my doubts we'll find out though because it would be embarrassing for the illustrator. Like you I can't see it being Iain McCaig's work that got rejected..

No. No way McCaig was rejected on the basis of his art. A spell of madness would have descended for that to have happened. I would be curious to see the dismissed work as I love looking at art and all things historically ff related, but I do agree that for the illustrator's sake it should be left alone, unless they themselves ever decide to share their work. I take my hat off to Bulmer for taking on that challenge last minute. Someone had to do it. A deadline for ff artwork should never be that tight.

OK, Back to it! - BATTLEBLADE WARRIOR
Thought I might get a wee bit more personal with each book before any reportage so lets see how it goes...
My copy is a first edition - yaaay! - it is really knackered (coz I played it a lot as a bairn) I've reattached the front cover, the adventure sheet has lots of tippex on it, and the back third of the book has been affected with damp for some reason and sections 300-400 don't 'flick' at all well! I also remember where I bought this book - Woolies! I was 10, and that the was the age I started getting into FF in a big way!
Anyway 1st try - 12/23/7 - Crap luck -
I decided to sneak through Vymorna, which was far too easy. I ended up with a mount, met Lecarte, went to Capra, met Katya (you can all guess where this is heading), and got staked out by Snakemen and died after failing a luck test...
Well, that didn't go well....

2nd try - 11/21/8 - Luck still not good. Anyway, this time I went and grabbed a boat with no issues at all, which is clearly ridiculous. I skirted the jungle and met White Eye but had nothing useful to give him, made it through the jungle, met Laskar and went into the city. I found nothing useful AT ALL, and ended up in a 'bleeding room' where I was killed by a bunch of Lizard men due to a -2 as penalty.
Hmmm

3rdtry - 10/17/8 - Decided to sneak out again, but I ended up on the boat again. I plunged into the jungle early (something I don't recall ever having done before!) and had an interesting panther encounter, found a wee panther statue then got wasted by the rather annoying Swamp Mutant (who I reckon is really poorly interested as he nieither looks particularly gross or scary)
I'm really not doing very well here - I'll have my other three tries tomorrow night!

4th try - 9/18/11 - well obviously the skill is hopeless due to the (presumably) unavoidable Swamp Mutant. I decide to break out of Vymorna by force (for fun) I manage to kill a few weaklings, but then roll a 6 when riding a lizard and fall off and die.....

5th try - 10/20/10 -Back to the 'River route' which is nice and easy with a decent skill. I enter the jungle early again. I kill the Swamp Mutant but at great loss to my stamina and even though I have the opportunity to collect my maximum of four provisions (big deal) I don't get the chance to eat them... Ienter the ruined city with a stamina of 6. However, this time I find a key, fight two slugs, find a diamond, then meet a skill 10 warrior king who destroys me because I have a -1 penalty to my attack strength.
Feel like i'm on the right track
can I win on my last shotty? - I'll be back soon!

6th try - MAX STATS
Ok, River route again - no problems. Swamp Mutant - good rolls against the wee bugger. Found 3 lots of jewels in the city and had to fight a lot of beasties. However I made it through with 6 stamina left. Never found the arm of telak, chose the right jewels and won.
SUCCESS!
However it all felt VERY underwhelming - there was a lot of good ideas in there but nothing was particularly well developed- all very average
anyway - new book the morn!

SLAVES OFTHE ABYSS
Never one of my favoruites (though I know its highly rated by many) I got my copy when it came out, and my and my friend both presumed it was a'space' book due to the odd cover. When I eventually got round to reading it I reached the early death ending set in the future , which confused a ten year old like me, so I thought it was a lot of rubbish... My book therefore is in good nick! - HOWEVER, a few years ago I decided to tackle it and I THINK I remember the route to take -so lets see!
1st try - 9/14/11 - OK, I went east, found a wee lassie, met an old friend , learnt the spitting fly, back to the city and rooted out the traitor, found the sage and met Bythos - however, I never encountered the Riddling Reaver so that was the end of me!

2nd try - 8/18/12 - Really nasty skill, so I decided to doom myself by heading north , just in case I was supposed to early on - of course I wasn't meant to, and therefore I died....

3rdtry - 11/20/11 - Better! So I got a wee clue at the beginning I missed first time and stuck to the roads, this meant I visited a village and met the Reaver - very good! Doing all the other things I did first time round meant I could enter the Abyss - armed with the right stuff, decent stats and a vague memory of what I was meant to do resulted in another win!
SUCCESS!
I liked it ok. Thought the abyss stuff was the dullest part, but really enjoyed the intrigue at Kallahmer this time round.
Tommorrow ---

Embrace the insanity. Invent a couple of spectacularly nonsensical ways of dying, mix them in with genuine descriptions of failed attempts, and see if anyone can work out which ones you made up.
