38 - SpellbreakerIt's apt in some way that along with Crypt, the two books that are the epitome of 'great to read, a pain in the arse to play' fall slap back in the middle of my ratings. If anything, Spellbreaker is an even worse offender in the unplayability department than Crypt - the latter being only a badly broken boss fight away from being a very hard but nonetheless beatable book.
Again I disagree. I mean we all know the boss fight is the biggest joke in all FF, but the rest of the book is also chock full of 'do or die' rolls, and some don't even involve your stats, even right at the beginning. In this way, it's just as bad as SB, if not worse because Ian was very experienced whereas Jon wasn't.

I think by this point Ian just assumed everyone was cheating anyway, so he created a cool super mega boss to heighten the achievement, regardless that it's not a legitimate win.
Never understood this 'argument': Ian assumed we all cheat and so he made an impossible book? Why? How would that affect the cheaters? Also, assumptions can be bad and wrong because a lot of people don't cheat and the book will be even worse for them.
Perhaps there is another 'argument' here - that Ian made a really shittily designed book with absurd difficulty because he had no idea what he was doing?

Just high-jacking this thread for a moment to ask if there's any chance of a new 'Pit' book any time soon?

I love how worst cover has got everyone talking. What is everyone favorite cover from the first 20 books?
Got to be House of Hell; so much detail.

Interesting, but for me Scorpion Swamp will always have the worst cover. Worse than Crystal of Storms?
To be honest, yes. I think that SS's cover is a little bit 'ugly', whereas COS is only childish.

What is the name of the '6 attacks' monster?
The KALUNDAI on reference 307. SKILL 8 STAMINA 20 and six attacks.
Thanks. I wonder how many players have beaten that enemy? Even a skill 10 would struggle, maybe even a skill 11?
Just ran a few tests and a skill 11 with an average stamina of 18 could win about 1 in five times.

Good one; I'd forgotten he even had a combat reference. The POOL BEAST is also superior to him. Some of the SHADOW WARRIORS might beat Voivod, but I was spared trying to interpret some of their special rules against him by finding the ridiculous monster with 6 attacks each round, which massacres everything else in the Legend of the Shadow Warriors.

Here's what the Pit book says:
BAOBHAN SITH
SKILL: 9 STAMINA: 9 ATTACKS: 1 WEAPON: Dagger or Small Bite ARMOUR: None DAMAGE MODIFIER: None HABITAT: Ruins, Dungeons, Forest NUMBER ENCOUNTERED: 1 TYPE: Undead REACTION: Friendly-Neutral (but see below) INTELLIGENCE: High
The folk-tales of the northern Old World are replete with stories of lone male wayfarers, travelling at night, who chance upon a beautiful sleeping maiden in a forest glade or ruined shrine. She will usually be clad in a fine gown, and may even be covered in a silvery mesh of cobwebs that indicate she has been in an enchanted slumber for a very long time. Woe betide any unfortunate who attempts to wake her using the time-honoured manner of a gentle kiss however, for this is no fairy-tale princess but rather the evil undead spirit of a BAOBHAN SITH!
The first attack of the Baobhan Sith will be to bite the throat of whoever kissed them. This requires a successful Test for Luck to avoid, and if the victim is Unlucky they lose 2 STAMINA points immediately and 1 STAMINA point per Attack Round for the next 1-6 Attack Rounds as their throat bleeds heavily. The Baobhan Sith will then launch into a horrifying and blood curdling scream, which requires another Test for Luck. Unlucky victims will be so weakened from the scream that they are paralysed and unable to move, even as the undead fiend pulls a dagger from her gown and stabs them to death.
A lucky individual who can resist the effects of the scream will then have to contend with the Baobhan Sith’s magical power. She may know many spells but her favourite is a unique spell called the Baobhan’s Bane. This spell causes green shards of light to surround the victim, sinking into their flesh and leaving them feeling chilled and weak. They must deduct 3 STAMINA points and 2 SKILL points, however the SKILL loss is temporary and lasts for three combats, including fighting the Baobhan Sith.

I do like the trap of getting the Spear and Warhammer. You quickly find out that the Spear is worth having and so you always choose to get it until you finally discover that the Warhammer being the only weapon to harm the Crystal Warrior is a poisoned chalice. I think it's even more evil than that: if I recall correctly, if you have the Warhammer against the Crystal Warrior you don't even find out that there is another way to defeat the Crystal Warrior. So you might just assume the "if you don't have a Warhammer, turn to x" reference is bad and never explore it.
I assumed that very thing and always thought you had no other choice.

I would have to agree with Bloodbeast in that the human being is a creature that is classed as a 'mammal', which is a type of animal. 'Green' nutjobs usually forget this too when going on about 'saving the animals'.

The very first thing I thought of was the animated tools from Warlock. I of course rejected them on the basis that everyone else would think of them too. Well, at least I assumed they would.
