I would've had Forest of Doom redone by Malcolm Barter and either Tazio or Mike to do all the Sorcery! art. The rest are fine with the original art.

For Q3 were there any other answers available? I had a rough time with some of these. Just off the top of my head, Agglax's frost breath in Armies of Death (should have gone with that). I think there are others, but can't confirm without checking the books. That was actually my first thought but I figured more people would remember that.

IIRC Ian said at the Fest that he 'enforced the matter' (or something to that extent) and we got what we got for the 2 new books. So bravo to Ian! You DO recall correctly. And he rightly got a round of applause for it. .... at least we seem to be heading in the right direction now. And thank goodness for that. I was on the brink of thinking that they cannot get the human beings to illustrate the books to an acceptable standard, then sod it - get the AIs to do the job. It was hilarious when the applause died down and everyone was expecting a more detailed answer about how it happened but Ian just stood there with that 'What? That's literally all that happened' attitude about him.

Interesting how Port of Peril has a decent number of votes while Gates of Death has none. Apart from the solid Quag-Shugguth art, the rest in both books are equally bad.

There are some individual pieces of the Scholastic artwork that would be good if they weren't poor imitations of the original artwork, though he exception to this is Caverns of the Snow Witch, where the art is far better than the original. The Yeti in particular is a good example of this as it looks like a large, threatening, violent monster and not a confused cuddly toy. I do like the art in Crystal of Storms but the style doesn't really fit fighting fantasy, it is more suited to poster art and more esoteric works. If Black Vein Prophecy and The Crimson Tide were ever reprinted though, I'd quite like to see that artists take on their art. I've grown to like the distinct woodcut art but I do think it's very divisive. Robert Ball's art is miles better than Vlado's and at least his are not rushed imitations, but I still prefer the original.

I also don't mind the hoarding but there has to be a point to it instead of just padding out a scene. For example, while I enjoyed Port of Peril, that initial setting is atrocious, consisting of, 'Ooo you have that? I'll trade you that for this!' for far too many paragraphs when it could be resolved in a single reference of 'You have enough Gold to buy 6 items from these 12. Buy what you wish then turn to...' Same result, simpler solution.

The whole series is an utter shambles and I wouldn't be surprised if it quietly vanishes next year... Even if the series might not be on the top of the game and the market is 'deeply niche' instead of 'quite popular', I've a feeling Jackson and Livingstone will continue to write FF because they love doing so - Sir Ian has written a lot, Jackson clearly put effort into SOS, and even Scholastic have raised their game about artwork. In specific reference to the art - you can see the rhino-man has number 3, so presumably the artist would have been very willing to write an alternate number if he had been told. Just like the room with the cape, which the text mentions has no handle but the artist didn't know.
About Scholastic raising their game about the artwork, this was only made possible due to Ian putting pressure on them for improvement as Ian wasn't happy with the grayscale art either. IIRC Ian said at the Fest that he 'enforced the matter' (or something to that extent) and we got what we got for the 2 new books. So bravo to Ian! Granted, if the series had started like that it would've been great but at least we seem to be heading in the right direction now.

Trial of Champions. Oh wait...
I think for a sequel, the title is best served as something to the point and in line with other FF titles. Maybe something like 'Deathtrap Dungeon: The Walk' or 'Labyrinth of Fang'.

Yes it needs to be totally dying all at once, not accumulated stamina loss. If it is a different instance of dying, it is unique, but if it is the same situation described on two difference references, it is a duplicate. I didn't think of the black hole annihilation method of dying. What an oversight! They would all be unique, as they are all different black holes, in different sectors and on different dates. Do these have to be Instant Death paragraphs?

From this we assume that whoever drew up the characters did not read and play through the books with them? So they were a pointless gimmick. It seems they were with FF. With Virtual Reality their pregen characters had different Life points, possessions and gold, and even numbers of Skills. But that's a diceless system, so perhaps that's a different ball-game. I definitely recall trying some pregen characters in VR, including some of the harder ones who's Skills were mainly Lore, but I don't remember whether the gameplay was 'hard\unbalanced' or 'broken'.
In VR it was probably easier with certain characters but I think they were all viable. If you were making your own character, any combination of Skills was also viable which is really impressive. The only book I'm not sure about is Green Blood which I've played the least.

I'd like a Citadel of Chaos sequel with Lucretia Dire being the main antagonist using cunnelwort to summon the Sorq spirits on to Allansia while secretly trying to resurrect Balthus Dire.

Pre-gen heroes should only exist if they are actually viable. Otherwise, it'll just be a waste of time and perhaps frustrating for new readers.

I included a point in the rules that you couldn't use this strategy π Nor was it okay to use the stat reroll in Demons of the Deep. The idea was to go through a journey rather than looking for shortcuts to get to Epic level. Do you suspend the rule about not exceeding your initial values or do you have to only power up with bonuses that explicitly allow you to exceed them? I never did do a comprehensive set of the rules because I'd have had to go through each book's rules meticulously but the general overall idea is there. It's probably better if you went to that thread instead. Just search for Basic to Epic.

I kind of did the same thing some time ago with my Basic to Epic game. You start with any book but at basic minimum stats (roll for anything else and choose your potion normally etc). Only if you finish the adventure successfully can you carry over stats and equipment to the next book. The goal was to get your Initial Skill or Luck to 13 or your Initial Stamina to 26 and complete the book. The were some other rules as well but it was really fun and made it a bit strategic in working out which books would allow you to progress. The fewer books you had to complete to get to your goal, the more successful you were. It seems like the speedrun for this game is to start with Appointment with FEAR and pick Super Strength. Keep of the Lich-lord, Master of Chaos, Black Vein prophecy, The crimson tide, Spellbreaker and Magehunter. The art is decent and includes a few that are fantastic but compared with the others, they aren't as good or consistent. So, you like\don't mind Eye Of The Dragon's art? Like I implied in the above post my view is undoubtedly coloured by my dislike for the gamebook, the artwork effectively conveys the feels of a generic dungeon but is nothing special (so, like the writing). The book is terrible but the art is great even if it might be subjects that are a little generic.

Martin Mckenna is king in this set. I decided to choose a couple of other artists as well to mix it up but this set as a whole is hard to separate - out of the 20 options, there's only 6 I'm not a fan of. Which 6? Keep of the Lich-lord, Master of Chaos, Black Vein prophecy, The crimson tide, Spellbreaker and Magehunter. The art is decent and includes a few that are fantastic but compared with the others, they aren't as good or consistent.

Q7. Identify an interior illustration that includes a person or creature noticeably struck by 2 or more arrows (or similar projectiles). Please provide the name of the gamebook and reference number.
Battleblade Warrior ref 242 β 4 (petch, hallucination, trialmaster, greenspine)
Scorpion Swamp ref 59 β 4 (Peter, evilwizard, vastariner, thealmightymudworm)
Crypt of the Sorcerer ref 102 β 2 (adrius, Peter's wife)
Deathmoor ref 181 β 2 (gabe fandango, kieran)
Ouch! I had a feeling this would happen. When you guys clash, everyone clashes in style. There were a couple of other options though. The man getting hit by arrows in Temple of Terror would've been okay, and I would have allowed the small but noticeably peppered figure in the background of the Manticore in Master of Chaos. At a stretch, I'd also allow the dead Rat hit by throwing knives in Trial of Champions (although I had to confirm that throwing knives could indeed be classed as projectiles). Peter's wife gets her first 2 pointer! And the leader board is looking a bit different.
Points after Q7
8 Peter's wife
11 adrius, kieran
12 Peter, greenspine
13 gabe fandango, vastariner, trialmaster
14 thealmightymudworm, hallucination
15 petch
16 evilwizard
Q8. Name a Fighting Fantasy gamebook illustrated by Bob Harvey or Tony Hough.
Spectral Stalkers β 4 (Peter, evilwizard, trialmaster, thealmightymudworm)
Seas of Blood β 2 (gabe fandango, kieran)
Slaves of the Abyss β 2 (petch, vastariner)
Demons of the Deep β 1 (adrius)
Night Dragon β 1 (hallucination)
Talisman of Death β 1 (Peter's wife)
Knights of Doom β 1 (greenspine)
Gamebooks beginning with S proved popular this time and the Spectral Stalkers truly found their victims (poor evilwizard). Bloodbones got no takers. It may be too late to catch up to Peter's wife but who will take Silver and Bronze?
Points after Q8
9 Peter's wife
12 adrius
13 kieran, greenspine
15 gabe fandango, vastariner, hallucination
16 Peter
17 trialmaster, petch
18 thealmightymudworm
20 evilwizard
Q9. In Stormslayer, identify one of the ways in which you can either board or escape Balthazar Sturmβs Weather Machine.
Caught up in wind/tornado β 3 (adrius, Peter, greenspine)
Potion of levitation β 3 (hallucination, gabe fandango, kieran)
Pegasus β 2 (petch, trialmaster)
Balloon β 2 (Peter's wife, thealmightymudworm)
Air elemental β 1 (vastariner)
Unusual backpack β 1 (evilwizard)
People got caught up in a tornado indeed and not even levitation could slow the descent of others. Pretty much a straightforward 'roll of the die' round and only vastariner and evilwizard got off unscathed.
Points after Q9
11 Peter's wife
15 adrius
16 kieran, greenspine, vastariner
18 gabe fandango, hallucination
19 Peter, trialmaster, petch
20 thealmightymudworm
21 evilwizard
Q10. Name an opponent you can fight in a Fighting Fantasy gamebook with the word 'DEATH' in its name. Please provide the name of the gamebook and reference number.
Death Skull β 3 (adrius, hallucination, gabe fandango)
Death-Knight β 2 (Peter, thealmightymudworm)
Death Head β 1 (petch)
Deaths Messenger β 1 (Peter's wife)
Death Imp β 1 (vastariner)
Death Acolyte β 1 (evilwizard)
Death Hawk β 1 (trialmaster)
Deathshead β 1 (kieran)
Envoy of Death β 1 (greenspine)
Mostly misses all around but fear grips 3 unlucky victims of the Death Skull. No idea why it was a popular choice as there were tons of other options. But it could be a decisive blow in deciding who will make the podium and who fell off it.
Final scores after Q10.
12 Peter's wife
17 kieran, greenspine, vastariner
18 adrius
20 trialmaster, petch
21 gabe fandango, hallucination, Peter
22 thealmightymudworm, evilwizard
We have a clear winner with almost a perfect run throughout. Many congratulations to Peter's wife β you are the Gold medal winner in Unique FF Answers Round 19! Taking up the Silvers are kieran, greenspine and vastariner who put on a commendable effort to steal second place. And commiserations to adrius who did very well during the whole game but the last hurdle cost him a podium place. There we have it. Thanks everyone for taking part!

Q4. Identify a place or location on any map that contains a number anywhere in its name. (For example, the name 'Wolfherten' would contain the number 'ten'.) Please provide the name of the gamebook and reference number (if applicable).
Craggen hEIGHTs β 2 (adrius, hallucination)
Temple of the Dark ONE β 2 (petch, evilwizard)
The THREE Sisters β 2 (gabe fandango, vastariner)
StONEbridge β 1 (Peter)
RuddlestONE β 1 (Peter's wife)
MoonstONE Hills β 1 (trialmaster)
The THREE Broken Fingers β 1 (kieran)
WhistlestONE Tor β 1 (greenspine)
Lion hEIGHTs β 1 (thealmightymudworm)
More options than I first thought. Anywhere with 'stone' in the name was a pretty good bet as there are many. Temple of the Dark One was a particularly great answer β too bad two people thought the same.
Points after Q4
4 Peter's wife
6 greenspine, Peter
7 adrius, vastariner, kieran, trialmaster
8 gabe fandango, hallucination, thealmightymudworm
9 petch, evilwizard
Q5. Identify a place or location on any map that contains a colour anywhere in its name. Please provide the name of the gamebook and reference number (if applicable).
GOLDwater Lake β 2 (gabe fandango, evilwizard)
Plain of BRONZE β 1 (adrius)
COPPERtown β 1 (petch)
RED River β 1 (hallucination)
GOLD Mine β 1 (Peter)
BLUE Potamos β 1 (Peter's wife)
BirriTANti β 1 (vastariner)
BLACKhaven β 1 (trialmaster)
WHITE Potamos β 1 (kieran)
GOLDflow River β 1 (greenspine)
SILVERton β 1 (thealmightymudworm)
Not much change here. Again, plenty of choices with various types of colours available. Excellent answer from vastariner for really thinking outside the box. The Blue and White Potamos get a very near miss. Quite unlucky for Goldwater Lake to get a clash.
Points after Q5
5 Peter's wife
7 greenspine, Peter
8 adrius, vastariner, kieran, trialmaster
9 hallucination, thealmightymudworm
10 gabe fandango, petch
11 evilwizard
Q6. Name an opponent you can fight in a Fighting Fantasy gamebook with both a Skill and Stamina score of exactly 10.
Great serpent β 1 thealmightymudworm
Black panther β 1 petch
Night Horror β 1 evilwizard
Balthazar Sturm β 1 gabe fandango
Cyclops β 1 kieran
Barbarian (RTFM) β 1 vastariner
Cobrax β 1 hallucination
Iron cyclops β 1 Peter
Griffin β 1 Peter's wife
Doppelganger β 1 greenspine
Fire wielder β 1 adrius
Centaur (COTS) β 1 trialmaster
In retrospect, I should have put more specifications for this question as everything about it screamed 'too many answers'. Even the super obvious Shapechanger and Giant Scorpion would have been fine. As such, we have another clean round with zero clashes. Although I did find it interesting that both the Cyclops and Iron Cyclops have the same stats. Probably intentional but I just never realized.
Points after Q6
6 Peter's wife
8 greenspine, Peter
9 adrius, vastariner, kieran, trialmaster
10 hallucination, thealmightymudworm
11 gabe fandango, petch
12 evilwizard
It's looking like a clear sweep for Peter's wife with 6 unique answers for 6 questions but greenspine and Peter aren't far away either. More tomorrow.

Here are the results for the FF Unique Answers Game round 20 is it? Doesn't matter. After what I thought was a slow start, we ended up having 12 contestants which is great and makes those hard to find answers all the more important.
Contestants
thealmightymudworm
petch
evilwizard
gabe fandango
kieran
vastariner
hallucination
Peter
Peter's wife
greenspine
adrius
trialmaster
Q1. Name a Fighting Fantasy gamebook that mentions the word βBASILISKβ anywhere in the adventure. Please provide the name of the gamebook and reference number.
Seas of Blood β 3 (hallucination, Peter, vastariner)
Night Dragon β 2 (petch, kieran)
Midnight Rogue β 2 (evilwizard, trialmaster)
Talisman of Death β 2 (greenspine, thealmightymudworm)
Stormslayer β 1 (adrius)
Vault of the Vampire β 1 (gabe fandango)
Temple of Terror β 1 (Peter's wife)
Seas of Blood turned out to be a popular choice despite being a good answer whereas the likes of the super obvious Temple of Terror only got 1 point. This first question was deceptively generous as there are quite a lot of possible answers available but well hidden. We could have also had Knights of Doom, Bloodbones, Legend of Zagor, Master of Chaos and probably a few others I hadn't thought of. No huge pile ups so far, so a good start for everyone.
Points after Q1
1 adrius, gabe fandango, Peter's wife
2 petch, kieran, evilwizard, trialmaster, greenspine, thealmightymudworm
3 hallucination, Peter, vastariner
Q2. Name a Potion you can acquire in a Fighting Fantasy gamebook that does not ever restore any of your attributes when used during the adventure.
Blue potion β 1 (adrius)
Potion of Fire oil β 1 (petch)
Potion of insect control β 1 (hallucination)
Lavender potion β 1 (gabe fandango)
Potion of invisibility β 1 (Peter)
Potion of levitation β 1 (Peter's wife)
Love potion no.5 β 1 (vastariner)
Love potion no.4 β 1 (evilwizard)
Love potion no.2 β 1 (trialmaster)
Potion of stillness β 1 (kieran)
Clearsee β 1 (greenspine)
Potion of vaporous essence β 1 (thealmightymudworm)
No need to fret here as there were many, many potential answers. Everyone managed to avoid a clash, even though the 3 looking for Love Potioners came close. No change to the scoring order.
Points after Q2
2 adrius, gabe fandango, Peter's wife
3 petch, kieran, evilwizard, trialmaster, greenspine, thealmightymudworm
4 hallucination, Peter, vastariner
Q3. In Robot Commando, identify one of the cities you can visit (it will be listed as 'City of β¦').
City of Pleasure β 4 (petch, gabe fandango, evilwizard, thealmightymudworm)
City of Worship β 3 (adrius, trialmaster, kieran)
City of the Jungle β 2 (hallucination, greenspine)
City of the Guardians β 1 (Peter)
City of Knowledge β 1 (Peter's wife)
City of Industry β 1 (vastariner)
Eek! Time to fret! The City of Pleasure got the most visitors (very appropriate) with the City of Worship coming close behind. No one went for the City of Storms. I was also informed that the Capital City could also have been a place you could visit but I had completely forgotten about that option. An error on my part but from the way I worded the question, I had to discount it as an answer.
Points after Q3
3 Peter's wife
5 adrius, greenspine, Peter, vastariner
6 gabe fandango, kieran, trialmaster, hallucination
7 petch, evilwizard, thealmightymudworm
Peter's wife takes an early lead with 3 single point answers with adrius, greenspine, Peter and vastariner not far behind. More later.
